I'm not sure, but i dont think nerve damage is painful, except maybe pins and needles feeling? I mean that's my guess and experience with nerve damage, no nerves to feel any pain sensation. The thing to be careful about is if the dog gets any cuts or bites on his legs, he won't feel it to let you know he's hurt, and can cause infection so you have to examine the legs daily for that.
See if he can make this adjustment, how old is he?
Dogs amaze me how they can lose their legs and still bring their quality of life back up to the same that it was before, with just a little time and care from you.

I'm not a vet, but I have had my share of critters.

Does this nerve damage hurt him or interfere with his activity in any way? Since you say he's an old dog, I won't suggest therapy.

It's really up to you to decide when to put your dog down. If he's otherwise healthy and happy, don't worry about it. But if he's hurting- he'll let you know when it's time.

Good luck.

If you don't see a noticeable difference with the rimadyl try tramadol. Tramadol is still on the market for humans I think its safer. Just my opinion. Remadyl (caprofin) wasn't given to dogs till it was taken off the market for humans as unsafe. Tramdol has been given to minors for pain I figure if they give it to the kids its better than what has been taken off the market for adults. As I stated just my opinion.

The only vet you should be consulting is the one you visit in an office. Please make an appointment for your lab to see your vet and get help.

I wish you and your lab the best

If you don't trust your vet's opinion, then you should TAKE your dog to a different one.
