"How's your Dad doing? If there's anything I can do just let me know. I'm there for you and your family." How about something like that?

You say nothing. Just be there for your friend. Don't feed him a lot of BS about how you "understand" what he or his Dad is going through because that is a blatant lie. It's like those do-goodniks at funerals where a couple has lost their child and they say "Oh, I know how you feel?". Really? what a crock. Instead just be yourself, don't act different and be a sounding board, a shoulder to lean on for your friend IF and ONLY if your friend wants or needs it. Else, better to say nothing lest you end up with your foot in your mouth. These inane ramblings of well-intentioned blockheads are almost as insulting as someone who laughs at you and says "Ha ha. You deserve it!" Don't be like that. Act normal. Take your friend to a restaurant and stay OFF the topic of legs. Not a good time to wax eloquent on your adoration of Marathon runners or Olympic track athletes! As for the dad, treat him EXACTLY as you did before he lost his leg. If you were friends with his or her dad before, no reason to stop being friends now, and no reason to pretend to be a nurse or Mother Theresa.
The bottom line is: Just Act Normal.

if my dad lost his leg....I would tell myself "Thank God it's only his leg and not his life." And i would like my friends to not say anything(if they don't know what to say) and to treat me the same and not be like "Oh you poor thing"...pitying me so much just coz my dad lost his leg.

Sometimes humor can help.

Maybe "It's a good thing your mom's name isn't Ilene." From there let your friend guide the conversation and be there for them.

Best wishes to your friend and their dad.
