Because to us, if you do not believe in something to the death, you do not believe in it at all.
If you would renounce Atheism or Christianity to avoid being killed, you are not convicted by what you say you believe.
All but one of the Apostles chose death before they would renounce their faith. John died of a natural death.
Judas killed himself in shame and sorrow for his betrayal of Jesus.

I'm a Christian. I don't know anyone who thinks some atheists would die before renouncing atheism. That could have only be said in jest. Why would someone die for nothing? I doubt any atheist would die before renouncing atheism ........look at your answers. They'd just lie about it if it meant their life....and I don't blame them. Now, a Christian would be required to take courage and never renounce Christ.......it is Paramount to our beliefs to never deny our Lord whatever the consequences. He tells us "if you deny me before men, then I will deny you before the Father". For the Christian there would be no greater shame. It is a very important precept in the Christian faith and it defines one as a Christian to submit to even death because of one's faith in Christ. The New Testament is full of those who did it. And though it's not usually required in the persecution process here, in the USA, it happens daily in some countries. Jesus had a lot to say about it, as did Paul. But, it is a quality the Christian inherits with his decision to follow Christ.......just part of the job description.

I'm not sure if the questioner is an atheist who says he would die before renouncing atheism, but I'm not saying whether one would or would not die for their faith -- even a faith in "no god".
I believe the argument Christians use is that the disciples, while they would die for their faith, would not die for a lie. If Jesus had not resurrected, it is doubtful that they would die to carry through the "lie" that He had. So the argument is that, since they would not die for a lie, it must be the truth.

Is it possible to renounce a non-belief ? Can you renounce not believing in the tooth fairy ?
I believe the term should be - - - before becoming a religious believer . With me , that won't happen .

People have a very romantic notion about "dying for a cause." Personally, I think "dying for a cause" is over-rated. It does little for the cause, actually, and, since everyone dies eventually anyway, is not that important.
"Dying for a cause" is over in a moment.
The difficult challenge is living for a cause, day by dreary day, unrewarded, unregarded, unnoticed, plodding through the quotidien muck of detail and tedium, keeping ever in mind that goal to which one has dedicated oneself. Now, there's the challenge.

Certainly It has occured to me. Most would defend their logic, Christains or atheist or muslim, etc. to the bitter end. Perhaps that in itself is as noble as a Christian going to death for their beliefs. Who's to say?

nicely, I wasn't in that ballot. honestly, i think of if I have been in a project the place a loopy individual replaced into protecting a gun to my head telling me that if I stated i'm a Christian, he replaced into going to shoot me, i might actual lie. If I have been in a project the place my non secular freedom replaced into being threatened and somebody (or a team of persons) have been persecuting Christians and/or making Christians resign their faith and doubtless worship yet another god, i does no longer try this.

Because some atheists would die before renouncing atheism. Or are you claiming that all atheists ultimately lack sufficient courage and strength of character?
