It would depend on what I want. If I am looking for a specific type of dog; a dog who looks a certain way, is within specified size, specific purpose I would look for a purebred from a good breeder. Good breeders will be at least as interested in your qualifications as a puppy home as you are in their breeder qualifications.
If I wanted a good companion, playmate, I would go to a shelter. Great dogs come from shelters and I would feel wonderful about providing a loving good come to a homeless dog.
Pet stores are off my list because good breeders don't sell to pet stores. Most dogs in pet stores come from puppy mills or breeders who are only breeding for the $$.
Sorry, can't make it in one word because each situation would be either a shelter or breeder.

BREEDER! You can see how the dog was raised and atleast see the Mom of the dog. You can talk to the breeder about all the questions you may have about the breed and call them if you have future concerns! Just make sure it's not a "Puppy Mill" (where most pet shop dogs are from). Ask to see their kennel and if they say "No", that's a big RED FLAG. They are hiding something. Either they have way too many dogs or it's filthy. Shelters are okay but you never know the dog's history and I have heard of shelter dogs turning on their new owners because of bad experiences in the past. Don't get me wrong, I still feel strongly that rescuing a shelter dog is great but it's just a bit of a risk and it requires a lot of patience because many of these dogs have problems and that's why they were left there. I won't even respond about pet shops. Great place for goldfish though. So my answer is BREEDER!!!!! Sorry, I wanted to explain my choice so there are many words!

It really depends, sometimes I prefer some over others. I would mostly like a breeder because you can be assured that you are getting a pet that has been treat well and had its injections and the same with a pet store (If they are a trusted store.), when going to a shelter you do get a good pet but sometimes you can have trouble with them later in their life and you may also find that they may have behavior and character issues (I have found this from my cat.).
Hope I could help, have a look at all three there all good in their own ways.

Breeder/Shelter. I learned a lesson 2 months ago purchasing my dog from a local pet shop. My beloved St. Bernard passed away, and I wanted another dog so quickly, and for lack of better judgment, I went to the local pet store. I basically saved my puppy from dying. I fell in love with her within the first 5 min of playing with her in the store. I knew she had a cold, but didn't know she had 2 parasites, and kennel cough. They pushed me to go to their vet, but I wasn't biting. I took her to my vet and got her all patched up. Needless to say, my poor puppy was on so much medication the 1st month I had her. She's great now, and I still feel if I didn't take her home, she would have died there. Pet stores only care of profit, not about the dog. Also you have to be careful of pet stores getting their dogs from puppy mills.
