Ha ha well, I believe that prayer does change things but in this instance it could have simply meant that he was a great player!

No, it is not a proof that prayer "works" any more than it proves that prayer doesn't work if he were to strike out.
This way of thinking reduces prayer to something like a magic spell. Something that works or does not work. Prayer is an expression of our relationship with God. The baseball player prays to God to let God know that he wants to hit a home run. it is still up to the player to hit the ball in a manner that will result in a home run.
