Not to be greusome, but do you ever wonder where the limbs go that are amputated in the hospital? Are they burried as a group or just dumped in the incinerator? I just wonder if the troops wish they could have said goodbye to their limb, like maybe somehow it would help in the healing process to say a last goodbye, to say thanks. Afterall they have been quite attached for some time.
If those that sent our troops to war could only envision the miles of limbs lost if lined up together holding hands, then maybe they could understand, maybe in the death of all these limbs we could appreciate life better.

"Only 500 amputees" Yeah, remind the guys that have lost their fingers, toes, and GENITALS that their losses are not counted among the 500 amputees. Dr. Imbascini, a surgeon with the California National Guard, was over in Germany for four months. As a urologist, he said he amputated the genitals of 1 to 2 men a day.
I bet there are plenty of men out there that would give their right arm to have their genitals back. Don't tell them their penis is not a limb.
This is not a political statement. Loss is profoundly sad and personal. Please, troops, men and women, protect your genitals while in a war zone.

This is not "woe to the poor soldier sentiment". The question is about loss, and how the injured can best adapt. No one that signed up, signed up knowing how devastating a loss of a body part would/could be.

It would be better to give money to programs and funds that help or assist those you mention or even volunteer at a Local VA Hospital than engage in idle speculation about it. What's done is done.

The limbs end up with all the other biological waste including the remains of tumors, fat, defective organs, etc.
As a Soldier, I have to say that I'm tired by all the anti-war/woe-to-the-poor-soldier sentiment. Not one of us was forced into this. Each volunteered for his or her own reasons. Noone that signs that contract should expect that a Soldier will never be called up to fight. Yes, I have been over there. No, it is not as bad as the media makes it seem. Yes, I would do it again. I love my arms and my life as much as the next person, but it is something I willing risk. And no, I do not know anybody that has died over there. I am appalled by the image of Soldiers the media has given the public. I didn't rape or murder a single person. I did give candy to kids and provide security for people though.

Whoever said in an answer "miles of limbs" or piles, or whatever, why don't you look at the medical hospital from the Gettysburg battle? They threw the limbs out of the hospital windows and made a pile.
I think this is a serious question, and there are some rude people out there. I would think that they would put them in an incinerator and cremate them. That's the logical explanation. I really, truly doubt anything else would happen.

Alot of the amputees come back with no arm or leg in the first place...just a mangled mess of flesh... god bless their hearts...
After a body part is detached from the body, it becomes medical waste. So it basically goes into the trash can. A special trash truck runs just to pick up medical waste... after that I am not sure where it goes. My guess to some kind of controled dumping facility where it is incenerated.

They are incinerated and given a mass burial. And, for the record, only about five hundred of the wounded in the war against terrorism, in all theaters of operation, have lost a limb.

Miles of limbs ????
Thats pretty sick, besides being impossible.
And not factual.
It's funny, John Kerry was wounded three times, and doesn't even have a scar to show for it.
But the Left, somehow thinks that everyone wounded in Iraq, is maimed for life.

It's sad that they lose a limb, but they also volunteered, and are willing to die for their country. One of my husbands friends was injured during the battle for Fallujah (aka Operation Phantom Fury) and was medically discharged for his injuries. He wanted to stay in, and was willing to go back to Iraq, but they wouldn't let him. You'l find that most men and women of our military are like this.
Jeeper_Peeper brings up a good point, not everyone wounded in Iraq is maimed for life. My husband was wounded back in 2004, and he's back in Iraq for a third time, and will probably return again.

Why do you have to use soldier's injuries as props for your political statements?
