have you read the bible? And if so, have any of the passages at least made sense to you on a human level? Such as love one another as I have loved you? If you have read any passages that you liked from the bible (other than The End, Amen) pleasetell me what they were.

I amgladmost of you have at least opened it and bothered tolook at it. I think it is important for believers and non believers to look at all possibilities. If not, then we are nothing more than cookie cutter Christians or uninformed non Christians.I am also glad many of you said there were things that did appealon somel evel. Thank you.

I've read it. For the few nice thoughts it has, it is overwhelmed by a violent and wrathful, cruel god who I find to be abhorrent.

The "teachings" of jesus were good...too bad no one actually follows them.

Yes. And yes, some made sense, but not that one. My favorite Bible passage though is still 2 Kings 2:23-24

I can honestly say that the Bible has to be the most overrated book in history. If somebody tried to publish it today, no editor would want it. It is filled with logical absurdities left and right, tons of pointless violence, stresses self-loathing, and has needlessly repeating material. The only people who are "illuminated" by it are people who already WANT to believe it in the first place and in fact already do have a strong belief in some aspect of it from the start (such as a "born again" experience).

Can you isolate some passages in it that sound like good quotes? Sure, but you can probably do the same thing with "Mein Kampf" if you comb through it enough.

I have read the Bible. There is good stuff in there.Proverbs are good overall, the love and compassion taught by Jesus is good. That does not make the bible anything other than worse than if there were no good in it.Because there is some good, people grab onto the whole thing. To me,not trying to be rude, but it's akin to having a pile of crap, with some sugar sprinkled in it.To get to the sugar, you must go through much crap.Ben Franklin's almanac contains just as much sugar,no crap.Overall, the bible in total is full of nonsense, and not worth attempting to separate the sugar from the crap.Because there is SOME sugar(love, compassion)people then eat the whole pile of crap, which is a ridiculous story, leads to willful rejection of knowledge and science.Leads to elitism,(example, the protesters with signs saying "Your son died because god hates fags.Leads to generally the most hateful, wildly ignorant people on Earth.I have nothing against "the Christ philosophy"I despise Christianity, which is very far removed from the Christ philosophy.I despise willful ignorance, such as people,in their zeal to spread "the truth" knowingly tell lies. This is the problem with the bible.Live well, pick another book if you need guidelines.Too much crap in the bible to make it worthwhile to pick out the good parts

I have read it.....all of it. I was not i impressed. I understood it all and I was shocked to see how people follow this. It is all stories. Where is Jesus word? It has some but shouldn't it focused more on Jesus not on hell stories and Adam and eve. After reading it, I feel lucky that I was born in my religion.

You won't understand this because you guys are only taught one way learning. You guys are not given an opportunity to explore or read about other scriptures. Your knowledge starts with Bible and ends with Bible.

If you don't know w hat I am talking about...read Geeta and Adi granth....then we will talk.

I've read it. Several times. It does have several powerful messages and instructions that are entirely common sense on a human level. Take care of your fellow man, especialy the less fortunate, be kind, honest, have dignity about yourself, and work hard. Most of that is also in many other religious writings and is also taught as character traits in elementary school. I get lost when I read that there is a man named jesus who supposedly did all this stuff and noone from his time noticed him. Not until at least sixty years after his birth do we find any writings at all. still there is not one artifact, carving, piece of carpentry, garment, nail, writing of jesus, sandal, nothing from the time when he was THE man, known at birth across the country by kings. This makes sense when you consider that prior legends of god-like men mirror virtually every aspect of jesus from virgin birth, miracles, and ugly death and resurrection.

Some of them. For example, I think some of the ten commandments (most of which are still in cultural use today) are a very useful moral guide for life, but I don't think I've ever related to any other the other parts I've read, apart from a literary perspective. Parts of Genesis and certain psalms are really quite beatiful, regardless of their religious content.

i take the old testament as historical-it is a wonderful look into a group of people from long ago-the new testament i enjoy the words of jesus quite the radical he was-the rest i could do without-i have to wonder if there is a book of just the words of jesus even the ones from the books that were not included in the new testament-do believe that would be a interesting read----smile and enjoy the day

I've read the bible several times and I personally like the love thy neighbor passage from the bible...but it's sad that so many self proclaimed christians do not live by that rule.

Both Job and Ecclesiastes manage to at least tacitly acknowledge the problems a belief system like that causes.
