It was a stake, and it MIGHT have had a crosspiece.
I too studied with JW's and they convinced me it was a stake. But then I started doing some in depth research into it and found out they were mistaken about a lot of things. They had some facts right, but drew a lot of wrong conclusions.
For example, the Greek word stauros BASICALLY meant "stake" at that time, not "cross". That's true, but stake is only the BASIC meaning, not the exclusive meaning - a stake with a crosspiece added was also referred to as a "stauros". The Letter of Barnabas uses "stauros" and describes it as a T. (Written about 100-133 AD). "Barnabas" may not be the best authority, but he lived at the time in question, and should know what stauroses looked like.
Also, they frequently quote The Imperial Bible Dictionary which says that originally a stauros was just a stake - but they almost always leave out the part that says that during the Gospel age, criminals were usually suspended on stauroses that were crosses.
Also, they told me that Constantine came up with the idea that Jesus died on a cross, because he was a sun worshiper and the cross was the symbol of the sun god. But when I researched it, I found out that Christians had been writing about Jesus' death on a cross for about 200 years before the time of Constantine.
They also told me that the cross was the symbol of the Babylonian god Tammuz, because it was his initial T. But the Babylonian tau isn't shaped like our T - it's more like an X, so even if his initial was his symbol, it wasn't shaped like the "cross" anyway, so it wouldn't even be relevant.
They also said that the Greek word 'xylon' meant 'stake', but I found out it actually means something made of wood. (Xylo is the Greek word for wood.) It is often translated as "tree" for obvious reasons. A tree, stake, crosspiece, or cross - they're all made of wood, so 'xylon' doesn't really tell us anything about the shape.
My advice is to do your OWN research - they can show you a lot of what looks like 'proof', but when you really analyze it, it isn't proof at all.

The Bible clearly and undeniably teaches that Jesus died on a cross (Matthew 27:32,40,42; Mark 15:21,30,32; Luke 23:26; John 19:17,19,25; Acts 2:23; 1 Corinthians 1:17-18; Colossians 1:20; 2:14-15). The Greek words in those Scriptures specifically identify a cross, not a pole or stake. The most common method of execution by the Romans in Jesus’ time was crucifying a person on a cross, with nails through their hands/wrists and feet/ankles. Sometimes people were tied to the cross in addition to being nailed to it. There were instances where people were crucified to poles, stakes, trees, x-shaped crosses, etc. But this was not the case with Jesus – He was crucified on a cross.

it was a cross the romans were one of the most cruel civilizations in it's time. In fact the only real threat to the romans was the til of the Haun. Anyway a cross was to show god that theses people had sined greatly so they would hang them on a cross to suffocate. I f you want to I think in John there is a conversation between jesus and the criminals.

The Bible that I read says that he was hung on a tree. I have not read one word about a stake. I guess this is their interpretation.........................
Jesus was crucified whether he was nailed on a cross tree or stake he was crucified and that is the message.

Traditionally we've said it was a wooden cross.
JWs will tell you a bunch of odd -- to put it mildly-- things. I'd suggest ignoring them, treating them with Christian respect, and then praying for them, that the Holy Spirit send Light into their minds and hearts.

Some people say that Jesus & "God" are the same thing. Yet, "God" as I understand "it", is "from Eternity to eternity".
This means that "God" cannot be born & cannot die. Ooops spot the flaw in some peoples undertstanding of "Christianity".
