A very close friend of mine had a late term abortion a couple of years ago. In her case she was carrying a fetus that had such severe genetic anomolies to the point that the placenta was beginning to consume the fetus itself. My friends blood pressure was sky rocketing as a result of the battle of tissues going on inside her. She had 2 choices, carry a severely deformed fetus to term that would never survive and likely kill her in the process, or have a late term abortion. She wisely chose the latter. Now that the anti-choice lobby has pushed their agenda through the legeslature banning such late term abortions this choice would not be hers to make. Now, 2 years later, she is again pregnent with a thriving, healthy, male fetus and will give birth in about 2 months. Imagine, if this law had existed earlier this new life may never have been possible. We could have easily lost the child, the mother and all future children she may yet have.

The few who really need to have an abortion are hurt by the millions who use it for birth control.

Your friend made a very tough decision! I'm sorry she had to go through that. I agree she made the logical good choice.

I'm pleasantly surprised you don't have a bunch of comments calling your friend a "murderer".

I would just like to ask, Where do people get the idea that women are using abortion as birth control? That is the most ridiculous thing I've heard. Do you even know any women who've had an abortion? Well I do, and it's not like they simply get abortion after abortion like "Oops I'm pregnant again"... that's not how it happens. In fact, most women who have abortions have never had one before.

In a tough situation like that you have to do what ever you feel is best. I totally support her deicision. I cant imagine how hard that must have been. Honestly, Im against abortion. Im against it when people use it as birth control or just dont want the responsiblities of thier actions. But this case, its very sad. I feel for her, and I am happy for her. She's pregnant with a healthy baby boy. Thats wonderful. Best Wishes to her!!!! Its just a terrible thing what she had to go through with her first pregnancy. I just cant even imagine that feeling.

FISH:::
You are very right. Its terrible that people in this woman's situation are looked down upon because of the people who take advantage of it, use it as birth control or just dont want to take on the responsibility that they have created. I've never heard it said better than what you said!!!

What a heart rending choice to have to make. I commend your friend for her strength I don't know if I could have made any choice.

As for partial birth abortion I believe it is abominable and wrong. I believe with all our technologies that there has to be a better solution and that this procedure belongs in Medieval times with the barbarians.

Do you know how partial birth abortions are done? It's a gruesome procedure. If a person who was not a medical professional performed an identical act on an unwilling woman and her unborn child, that person would be reviled as worse than Hannibal Lecter.

Sometimes, drastic measures have to be taken in order to save a life. But those measures do not have to be so gruesome. An infant, regardless of how deformed, should be treated with dignity.

In a case like this of course it should be legal. Though I don't expect the staunch pro-lifers to agree with us.

The odd part is, they are against abortion even in cases where the possibly aborted fetus will not survive, in any case.

I think in your friends case, it was needed. On the other hand, some people just decide they don't want it after they have been carrying it for so long then just 'get rid of it', I think thats wrong. I think it should only be legal if someones life is in danger.

I see the anti-choice people saying this situation is ok...but what they don't know is that THIS IS what partial birth (late term) abortion is about. The fundies and republicans don't like to talk about this kind of situation though.

Before Roe v Wade, the option of abortion to save the life of the mother was always an acceptable criteria- so, no, she would NOT have been doomed. I know how you all love to demonize those of us who believe abortion on demand is wrong, but--like it or not, we have a right to our opinion; and Roe v Wade is not the revolutionary savior of women.

In that case, abortion is the logical and right choice.

That is a tough one. I am against abortion myself, but to each their own. I am happy she is going to have a healthy baby this time.
