I’m 21 and my boyfriend is 28.. For a while, (2 years or so), he didn’t have a job. That was really hard to work things out and pay for things you need and still balance some rewards for yourself (else you’d go insane).. But we did it.. I did a few get paid to sites (you can check my profile for a link to two but there are more out there like sendearnings.com and such) and it gave me a little play money here and there and I’d spend the rest of our paychecks on mostly bills.
Now, my boyfriend has a job and it’s pretty good, but with the extra money we are getting we got things we really needed but couldn’t afford, like a new truck, and so in all reality it’s like.. yeah, we are getting a lot more money per month, but there is always something to spend money on that you need and so it feels like we still have the same amount to play with and we are still living paycheck to paycheck. I think it’s just how life goes.. When you get extra money, there is always something else you need that will take up that extra money.
Usually I will put away a chunk of cash every paycheck that I won’t miss into savings. I pretend like the savings isn’t even there and i will NOT touch it unless it is an utter emergency, Then, when you get enough, you can do something like go to a nice restaurant or buy something you’ve really wanted to buy and treat yourself.
Well, I am rambling now, but the bottom line is that it seems most people are living paycheck to paycheck. I know a lot of people who make a ton more money I do and they even live as such, because when you have more, it always seems like something comes up that you need to spend it on. My advice? Don’t take it as a curse. I am glad I have to work hard and save up for things that I want. It makes getting them that much better. If everything was handed to you, you wouldn’t appreciate a thing and that isn’t how I want to live my life.
Hope this was somewhat insightful

I'm not 40, but my husband and i, doesn't really live paycheck to paycheck, because we save money when didn't have children's, now we have a 2 year old daughter, and is a little more easy to save money when u get used to.
Just buy what u really need, in holidays u can buy something for your self.

census data says that most are near broke
and, most are denying it. they cover up by running up their charge cards.
Since I'm in my late 50s and the children are grown and have own jobs, our finances are much improved.
hang in there
