It's VERY disturbing to me as a Christian.

We simply CANNOT try to play God and create life on our own.
Life begins with the Lord.....NOT US!

Incredible! I love that we're finally taking this on, even if the "top down" approach is going to be achieved first.

Think about the potential! Plastics? Greenhouse gas consumption? Alternative fuel production? This could be the next big step in technological advancement.

Although it IS a little worrying that we might create something harmful that we may not be able to control. Hopefully we have the foresight to test our creations extensively enough before implementing their use.

I think it's really exciting... but I hope we know what we're doing. I find it a bit disturbing because they are intorducing an unknown into the biological pool. But it's still exciting. Learning is always exciting.

Phishpish had said what I was incapable of expressing. :-)

Both! The possibilities are tremendous!
It holds great chances of benefits, and great chances for abuse.
Maybe it can create bugs to make vaccines or clear pollutants, or maybe it will create extreme biological weapons, or release Frankenbugs upon us by accident.

I guess without the risks though it would not be as exciting.

I wonder how the Fundamentalists will react to biologists playing God by actually creating life.

Worries me... who is responsible enough to create life? That's very scary to me. We have a hard enough time being responsible as humans doing this naturally. Now we're gonna do it in a lab. Suppose we create life. Where will the soul come from? Wow.

It's going to be fun seeing the science-fearing gang saying "Stop playing God" while it leads to saving and improving quality of human life.

Nutters.

Exciting, there's no need for 'God' now. It's only worrying if you believe that only God can 'play God', because it's another step to disproving this.

No worries, just ask them to make their own atoms to combine into the molecules. and if they do that ask them to make their own protons, neutrons and electrons, and if they do that ask them to make up the laws of physics that govern them.

Eventually, God is the only one to create - ANYTHING

Peace and Blessings,
