claimed to have accidently run over a badger, whilst driving along a country lane the other night, she said she went home got a shovel and buried it. Everyone thought it was hilarious, i was very sad and said that i believe there is a badger protection society, who requests any reporting of injured or dead badgers in order to keep track of numbers?

DEFRA and the local Wildlife Trust keep track of live, injured and dead badgers.

In my area a few years back we had several badgers die from being poisoned. DEFRA (Department in charge of the Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs) were informed by the local police, and the a lot of the local farmers were warned to be more careful with pesticides and the like.

I think it's sad when anything gets run over. Go up the A12 any day and see all the dead animals and birds at the side of the road. I think people run them over deliberately north of Essex. However, back to badgers...aren't the government culling them or something because of TB in cows - or did I just dream that??

Badgers are a protected species. But there is no autority for counting thier numbers or deaths, as there is no authority for counting thier births. I believe they survey numbers when neccessary.

It is only agricultural livestock and dogs which need to be reporting
