I have the same problem. Perhaps the advertisers keep the volume high while recording on purpose. I jump to next alternative channel of my interest. I do not think that a home theater system will reduce the volume automatically. It may mellow down the sound and make it sweeter.

This is normal, some TV new once can solve this problem but you need to make sure it is designed to do so.
This is because, commercials are designed and well planed to follow certain programme, they are recorded at couple of decibel higher then the program before and after them. 1 decibel is actually 10 times louder.
Decible is a meassurement of a sound and it is set up on logrithymic scale to the base 10.

No matter how cheap or how expensive the TV, commercials come on with blasting volume. My husband hits the mute button on the remote for every commercial.

TV stations set the volume of the commercials higher than the programs themselves. They do this to help grab your attention.

thats because the new digital sound system does not rely on the old cone speakers, wich by there size, they distributed the emmited soundwaves to give a richer or warmer sound, and commercials have always gone for the high end frequency to maximize there volume, and with shallow speakers of today you got more higs than lows, and with digintal sound, they have a field day to say the least. tweak down your high or treble on the tone or equalizer,or watch PBS, they have the least comercials.

It happens to most TV's. Mainly when music is playing it occurs. I make sure I have the remote handy. It is the programmes that are to quiet not the adverts that are to loud.
