I have heard this from a friend and was just curious as to whether or not this is true- thanks!

Lisa's right.

If you ask the Mechanical Transport section's techies nicely (and throw in a crate of beer for their trouble) they'll happily check your car over. If you need parts you'll have to buy them yourself, and they'll fit them (for a bit more beer). Then you will still have to take your car to an official garage for the MOT.

They won't use government parts. We all know that's stealing!

There may not be a transport repair shops where you are stationed. The Army does not issue MOT certificates, and they have to have an officers permission to do any private work. All work done in the workshops has too be logged and signed by the person who done the work and the Chief engineer. Don't know where your friend got this information from, but it is not true.
