If she is fine with having her paws handled then just clip the tip off of her nails to start with. If you can see the quick then you can trim up to but not through it. Otherwise, just clip the small, triangular tip and then do it again a few days later.

The quick gets shorter as the nail get shorter so this way you won't accidentally cut into it.

If she doesn't like her paws handled, you can desensitize her to the clippers over time by just playing with her paws initially, touching them with the clippers, clipping one nail, etc. It helps if she is sleepy, fed and not up for a big fight.

I heard that there is a clipper on the market that senses where the blood is so you can avoid it. It sounds like a good idea if it actually works especially if your dog has thick, black nails.

Here is a drawing of where to clip:

If the nails are pink, you should be able to see the quick inside, and make sure you don't cut into it. If they're black, its trickier. What I usually do is just cut off the curved part at the tip, and then use a file to smooth the nail down a bit. Also, make sure you have some styptic powder on hand to stop the bleeding if you do accidentally quick the dog.

If you have never cut your dogs nails before then just take the sharp tip off, if your dogs nails are black in colour its hard to see how far the quick comes down, If your dogs nails are white then you should see a black line running through the centre this is the called the quick, If you cut into the quick it will be pain full for your dog and make there nails bleed which is quiet hard to stop, It would be like you cutting your nails to short and we all know how painful that is, Good luck.

The first time I did my dog's nails was a nightmare. She was squirming all over the place and I was scared to death that there would be a blood bath. Bribery has worked wonders. I sit her in her bed and produce the clippers, then I give her a treat. I lift a paw, and give her 2 treats. I clip a nail and give her 3 treats and an extra one for being so brave. And so it goes. It gets easier each time, and I've reduced the number of treats too.

if she doesn't tolerate the clippers, you could try a dremel (some professional groomers use a dremel rather than clippers). some people have more success with this because it doesn't squeeze the nail, just shaves off pieces. it does require some practice. recently my dog decided to start fighting the clippers (after 7 months no problem - go figure - and i never hit the quick) so i am also considering alternatives at this point, including the dremel. good luck.

You can buy a set of dog nail clippers from the pet store and do it yourself, just be careful not to cut too short as you could make them bleed, if you look at the underside of the nail you should be able to judge how far down you can snip.

Just found this link for you;

Most groomers charge a small fee for nails. My hands are way too shaky to even think about cutting my dog's nails. However, if your brave of heart cut just before the "quick" and have styptic powder on hand.
Personally, I'd rather have someone else be the "bad guy". ;-)

I use a large metal file to file my dogs nails, It is much easier on the dog than clippers.

Look for the pink , cut away from that...for future reference, when you get a pup, start messing with their feet when they are young, make them lie down, and have them let you cut nails and whatever, so it will be easier for you when they are older and bigger...

Cut her nails!? Well, my grandfather cuts my dogs' nails. Even if they're 5. He just asks for help. Hold her head and mouth, ask someone to help you, at least 2 of them to help, one will hold the head and mouth then one hold the dog so it won't get away. "You" are the one to cut her nails.
