Death occurs when the subtle consciousness finally leaves the body to go the next life. Our body is like a guesthouse and our mind is the guest., when we die our mind has to leave this body and enter the body of our next rebirth, like a guest leaving one guesthouse and traveling to another. Any comments?

Death occurs when the soul leaves the body. Afterwards comes judgment.

Hebrews 9:27 [I]t is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment.

The body is the suitcase for the soul. We are a soul firstly, not a body with a soul. I believe (as my dad did) when we sleep we are joined by the Silver cord to the high realms of learning (heaven if you wish) we are never separated from the Creator. At the moment of death (of the earthly body), the soul travels the Silver Cord for the last time and it is severed. Much like the child in the womb relies on the umbilical cord for survival from it's mother - we rely on our connection to the Creator.

When we die our soul leaves the body and goes onto The Afterlife where it is held accountable for all actions within that life time. The Afterlife's appearance is dependent on how we live our life. Live morally and you will be rewarded justly but live immorally and you too will be justly rewarded however it may not be to your liking. After a time our soul is then reborn into the next body and into a new life time.

IMO, all living things have souls, be they human, dog, butterfly, rose, or maple. When a living thing dies, three things can happen.
1.) Its soul goes to the afterlife Heaven/Summerland/Nirvana/Call it what you will. I see it as a great pool where all souls gather to stay for eternity or to be reincarnated later, depending on Godd and/or Karma.
2.) Its soul is immediately reincarnated.
3.) Its soul remains on earth as a ghost to finish something first before it moves on to step 1 or 2. That something can be learn a lesson it should have learned or to finish a job it started or to act as a guard for a location or person. That's why houses can be haunted, IMO.
When a soul is reincarnated, it can come back as any life form, be it what it was when it died or a human soul can return as a dog, a butterfly's soul can return as a rose, or a maple's soul can return as a human, etc. depending on Godd and/or Karma.

10 points.

I am still trying to figure out this for myself. I am Catholic, but I am very open to other beliefs that are of the same lineage. Sometimes I think I am my own grandfather as I have a huge calling to tell my current father that he is not all the things that my grandfather said he was and vice-versa for the things that I/he didn't say he was.

i don't know how people convince themselves of life after death. is it a pleasant delusion to have?

how do you feel about fridge lights? sure, common sense says the switch turns off the light when you close the door... but how could we ever know? maybe it's just a new beginning for the fridge light. and maybe the cottage cheese gets up and does a little dance for the carrots.

I think our 'consciousness' leaves our bodies and goes into whichever 'heaven' you personally believe in, to rest and possibly watch over loved ones we left behind. Then, when we are ready, we return to a new incarnation.

The real answers depend on what you believe. Buddhist believe in reincarnation. Christian and muslim don't believe in reincarnation.

If you really want to know 'where' people go after dead, go in the google and type 'near death experience'. What they see are quite almost the 'same thing'; Heaven or hell.

p.s - believe it or not...
