No definitely not. The only reason the chase was implemented is that no one would have the Chase automatically won with a few races to go and to make the Chase for the Cup more exciting. I liked the old points system better but they have a few good qualities that could make one great Chase. Award more points for wins and poles, and more for leading laps and the most laps. Also, award points for wins, but do not reseed them, and do not RESET the points. No 12 drivers, instead leave it at 10. Have a race for 11th like then did and give that person $1 million dollars like they did in the past. Award the points leader for the regular season more points so he doesnt lose his entire lead. Make the other drivers work to catch up to him, as its not his fault he has been consistent the entire regular season. These are just some of the few things that would make this Chase even better and Jeff Gordon's point lead being deminished like that is not fair at all and its probably the stupidest thing NASCAR has done.

I personally hate the chase. I would bet that more than 2/3 of the field would be eliminated from championship competition under old point system. I bet if Jr was in first all year(likely never to happen though) but if he were & then lose to,let's say Jeff Gordon or Jimmie Johnson who started chase in 12th place & the win title by a few points, NASCAR would change rules in a heartbeat & Jr Nation would be crying foul. I still think Gordon will win this year's championship but do away with the chase or re-do points with a a more logical solution. Maybe not top 12, let's say all drivers within 300 or 400 points & give more bonus points than 10 for a win. Jeff was almost 600 points ahead of 12th place driver when chase started but was only 50 points out of 1st & that really sucks.

Treg, you're wrong about Gordon not being as far ahead had we been under the old format. There may have been a few races that went differently, but he would still have a huge lead in the standings.
No, the chase is not fair. But under the old system, NASCAR would have lost a lot of viewers for the last few races of this year....because Gordon is so far ahead. They need to find a happy medium between the two that still rewards the lead driver after the first 26 races.
EDIT: I see where you're coming from Treg, and I agree with you. :-)

No! Even though I am not a Gordon fan, there are drivers in the chase that would be out of the top 12 right now and some other drivers could end up in the top 10 instead of between 13 and 20th.

not fair cause you cant compare championships to years past....what if the pga decided to do this at every major championship...lets see tiger woods smokes the Field for three days and has an 8 stroke lead going into the final day...but wait now he has to start even with 12 other players...get my point? how can you then compare him to all the other records of golfers past...not kool.. nascar pushes itself to be a team but its closer to an individual sport. is golf a team sport tiger doesn't make his own clubs in the barn out back does he? its not football. A play off system don't work for crowning a true champion in this sport ,cause only over many races can we start to see who is the best driver for a given year...I don't see a road course in the chase...the 20 and the 24 would love that !!they play 7 game world series so one pitcher can win or lose it for his whole team..so that luck is taken as far out of the picture as possible..as much as Jeff has done this year and in the chase..one flat tire could crown Clint Boyer the best driver of 2007...now who really thinks that's true!

No it's not fair...Gordon already lost one Championship to Provisional King Kenseth and now, the same thing can happen. The so called "Chase" format is a joke. To strip drivers of 26 weeks of racing performance, to base a Championship on a 10 race shootout is beyond ridiculous.
Brian France is an IDIOT!!!

Woulda, shoulda, coulda has always been a part of racing and the final standings. What's NOT fair is to suggest that he would be THAT far ahead if they were still using the old points system. He would have been much more conservative during the season if they didn't reset the points with 10 races to go. Some of his wins this year have been because of calculated gambles that they would NOT have attempted under the old system.
Edit: Bizz, I'm not saying he wouldn't be ahead but merely they would not have been able to risk making some of the calls that worked out his way earlier this year. He would no doubt still be favored but it would be closer than 498 points, in my opinion.

Nothing about the chase is fair, was fair or ever will be fair with this farce.
From the leader in the points right to the very last person in the points.
The chase only works in NA$CAR's mind. It is the end of the season for me. I pay no attention to who is in it or who isn't and that is the way I have dealt with it. I watch the good ole tracks in the south east and that is that.
I have watched all I can stand by then any way's with the chase and there yellow flag happy racing and there top35 rule, well I just start feeling ill by then.
Not sure how any of you put up with it.

OK, i know i am gonna get thumbs down but thats ok. But here it goes.....If the drivers hadn't complained about Kenseth winning the championship by just finishing good all year the chase would have never been. Back then drivers, including Gordon complained about how finishing good won the championship while others won races and lost the championship. So he can only blame himself. He complained then and now he complains too? You can't make everyone happy. So either deal or bug NASCAR to go back to the old way.

Ray Y said it all. The chase is just a chance for someone to steal a championship. I'm not a Gordon fan, but he has been consistant all year, so why penalize him. Boy that hurt!!!!
