it would be best to go to a doctor. your foot is constantly on the ground, so who knows what got in there.
Its not much to worry about unless the tissue turns blackish around the edges, the redness spreads rapidly, or pus starts to form. Also, if you start to feel sick. But better make sure anyway.
A cut that large will not heal like a normal, smaller cut would. It will heal from the inside and work up, meaning that it might not close for a while.
I would suggest putting Hydrochloride on it.( yeah it stings but it works)
Also, wounds wont heal as fast if you have a bandaid on it. Exposure to air will help it. Use gauze its better.

If soaking and topical antibiotics are not doing the trick, you may need to go to the doc and get some oral antibiotics. Don't wait too long... also, make sure you are up to date on your tetanus shot.

**EDIT**
The purpose of soaking an infection in hot, hot water is so that the heat will bring the white blood cells closer to the surface of the skin (that's why your skin turns red), where they will fight the germs causing the infection. And yes, hot soaks ARE, INDEED, good for fighting infection.

Try soaking it in warm Salted water. Soak it for at least 10 minutes 3 times a day. If it does not help within the first day then go to the doctor.

If you leave it any longer, it might grow to become cellulitis, a bacterial infection which feeds on on open wounds. Acute cellulitis will require antibiotics administered via IV injection, otherwise oral prescriptions will do. Try not to put a lot of pressure on the affected foot and elevate the foot while lying down. But all in all, see a doctor soonest possible.

Instead of soaking it, you need to put peroxide on it and let it bubble for a while, then wipe it clean with a damp cloth, put antibiotic ointment on it and bandage it up, the bandage will soak up any moisture from it. Your not giving the wound time to dry out, bacteria forms in warm moist places.

I don't know if this will help you, I do know it will help heal a cut. GO to a health store ask the clerk for neem oil. It isn't exspensive, until you can pick up the oil you can soak your cut in salt water 2to3 times a day. to give you a way to measure the amount of salt, I would put a tablespoon of salt in a litre of water. Wipe the cut dry by dabbing it with a clean pad used to sterilize the area, apply oil and if you heal quickly could you please e-mail me. chicosadog@yahoo.com

First of all, why are you soaking it? The quickest way for a wound to heal would NOT be to make it wet. Try tea tree oil on the wound - that's a natural infection killer in your vitamins section at your local department store. don't put too much or the bandage won't stick. It's strong-smelling but it works for a zillion other things, too! Look it up on google for more ideas for tea tree oil - a small bottle goes a long long way!

A couple of possibilities.

1) Quit picking at it!

2) Diabetics sometimes do not heal as fast.

forget the soaking, this spreads germs if you leave it moist, what you need to do is wash it with soap but anti germ/septic cream on it plaster it/dressing it for a day and then let it dry
it should start healing within 2 days, kwwp it nice and dry.

Sounds like it is time to see the doctor. Might be something in it.
