I myself am a smoker, but I put my butts inside of my cigarette box. I smoke cloves...they are brown so even if wanted to throw them on the ground, at least they'll blend in some what.
At work, during smoke breaks, I go outside and see at least 20 butts littering the ground, even though there is an ashtray close by. The only thing thing I can think of is that regular butts smell way nastier than their clove counterparts, and that keeping them in their box/pocket will make them smell awful...but it doesn't answer why they cant just walk over the 2-3 feet to throw them away.

...its even worse at parties, when even friends and relatives just throw their butts in your driveway, lawn, garden, etc...

It is the compulsive midset that consistantly decides to smoke in the first place which makes the decision to litter.
Smoking leads to negative consequences that I don't need to list here.
Littering also leads to negative consequences, but far less negative than smoking.
If a person prefers to act on the desire of the moment (i want a cigarette) and ignores the consequences (smell, appearance, aging and both early and painful death) they will probably make many other shortly-scoped decisions in their life.
Once the cigarette is finished, they can act on the desire of the moment(i want this gone) or they can think long term(i go find a trash can or plan ahead next time) The pattern of short-term thinking will lead one to litter.
People who act on a compulsive basis are more likely to smoke, and those who smoke are therefore also more likely to litter.

I totally agree that it's the height of rudeness and inconsideration of the environment. It only adds to the bad reputation that smokers already have. I have a portable ashtray which I empty at home, and if in the case I go out without it, I stub the cigarette out on the ground, wrap it in a tissue and dispose of it thoughtfully.
What's equally as bad is those who drop their gum on the ground. Don't they ever wonder about the gunk the people who step on it have to clean off their shoes?
Yep... they're my 2 pet hates. And I guess people can be just very lazy and thoughtless of others. Basically, they couldn't give two hoots about anyone.

I have no idea. Im one of only two non smokers at my work and out back the ground is littered with tons of the nasty smelly things even though there is a huge white bucket with sand right there. Its so nasty that during breaks I wont go outside for some air because of it.

lazy! thats why, plus if no one is looking they think "who cares, no one can see me. they will never know its me". sometimes they just forget about the ashtray and just stomp them out. or there is the ones that for get they have one in there hand and almost walk into the building with one, when they reach the door they stop them selfs and toss it..then keep walking. i have had friends that enjoy throwing them for fun to see how far they go. i am a ex-smoker and i always tried to use the ashtray when there was one, but i am guilty of doing those things at one time.

Yeah, man, its like no-one gives a damn anymore.
Im a very conscientious smoker. I make sure the cherry is dead before i toss the smoke. Also, i dont feel comfortable about just chucking the smoke on the ground, or someones property...
idk why ppl do that. Smoking's already a bad habit (so they tell us :P), why make it worse?

I think most people unintentially do as they see others do... like monkey see, monkey do. I personnaly think it is disrespectful to throw them on the ground (there's no maid to clean up after them- only me), but for someone to change it takes alot of patience and understanding on both parts.

I wish I knew. Smokers have a bad enough image already without further damaging it through this dirty and anti-social habit. I always retain my butts for disposal.

Beacuase most smokers are that type of person - if they are too lazy to quit they are most likely too lazy to put their rubbish in the right place.
Also if you put in it a normal bin they probably think it will catch fire.
