I read a few times this has been found in graves around the globe, a mystery yes--what other findings/research regarding WHY this was done?

Pure logic would dictate that we first buried the dead because they created a fowl odor. If you love someone, you would rather have a burial ceremony that to watch them rot and smell them decomposing. -- eh?
