You can't stop thoughts from happening, but you can learn to control them so you're not disturbed by irrelevant, destructive and uncontrolled thoughts. What you need is to develop two things: mindfulness and single-pointed concentration. Mastering you mind takes many years of devoted work, but it's well worth the effort, and you will be rewarded also during the way (every step in the right direction is a step in the right direction, be it ever so small).
The opposite is, sorry to tell you, multitasking and stress.

I could interpret your question a couple of ways. I think it is unlikely you are asking how to clear your mind in a practice of meditation. But just in case, I will tell you that clearing your mind can make you vulnerable to the influence of evil beings.
As far as distracting thoughts while multitasking is concerned, I recommend you beef up your nutrition with vitamins and supplements. Make sure that there isn't an abnormality, or if there is, research that specifically. Some pharmaceuticals can aggravate this problem. I personally stay away from them. I am able to concentrate and focus, even though I have a gazillion things going on at once. Some people need extra nutrients. Self discipline also plays a role. Get enough sleep.

I'm a multi-tasking, ADD type. I'm not sure if you mean "how do you stop thoughts from racing through your mind," or "How do you stop them from coming true," so I'll assume you mean the former.
You have to give yourself some "time out." Not time out because you're misbehaving ... lol,... but you have to finish some of your tasks or at least stop them for a moment and just give yourself a while to stop spinning out of control.
When I'm going full throttle, I sometimes decide to give myself a break, but I use that time to go and do some other damn thing! That's NOT taking a break! You've got to actually STOP.
Then you sit down somewhere quiet, with nothing to read or hold or fix or listen to or look at. Just quiet nothing. And then you have to give yourself the greatest break of all......
Peace ... of .... mind.
Doesn't that sound heavenly. Calm, still, quiet peace of mind. You may find yourself drifting off into thoughts of stuff you should be doing rather than sitting around but ... STOP. And give yourself this gift of peace of mind ... again.
Your world will not fall to pieces if you take a half an hour or an hour to stop and close your eyes for a while, or meditate or do tai chi or go to the water and listen to the waves, or play some blissfully calm music, or go for a massage. You have to MAKE some time for you.
Because if your stress gets to you and you get ill, and ... well we won't even go there, but if you didn't have tomorrow, would all the stuff you have to do today really matter?
Peace ... of ... mind. Mmmmm.

Learn a simple meditation technique to still the mind and regain control and peace.
Repeating a simple mantra like NAM MYOHO RENGE KYO works for me if I am in a panicky situation, you don't need to know what it means and in some ways it's better to chant something quite meaningless initially...even though I have researched what it means it's very detailed and doesn't interest me much being atheist so I ignore that part of it, it still works the same and stops the negative/ scary/ stressful or unwanted thoughts crowding in immediately. You can chant quietly in your head at any time for as short or long a time as you feel you want or need to, you don't need to speak the words out loud.
Hope you find this starts you on the way to finding peace when you need it, it's a useful tool but just one of many you can try.

practice makes perfect my dear. we all have something that we struggle with. thoughts dont just disappear because we want them to. If that were the case there would be no AA meetings.
i read some of the other comments. The counting one is good. sing a song, get a piece of gum, get up and walk down the hall and say hi to someone.
over time this gets easier.
practice makes perfect.

You stopped the thought process with a spoken word.
Speak God's word when you have thoughts that exalt themselves above the word of God.We're told to cast down vain Imaginations. With The Spoken word of God.You may have to do this alot,but It will get better.Blessings to you.

It's hard, but you just really have to focus on the task at hand. When other thoughts start to creep in, give yourself am
imaginary slap and get back to what you're supposed to be doing. If it's more severe than that, you may want to try an anti-depressant for situational depression or if it's always been an issue, get checked for ADD.

When I start to feel real stressed, or like my head is in the clouds, I just pray about it. I ask for help concentrating, and getting those other thoughts out of there. It always helps me.

I remember a Native American parable. The chief describes the soul as two dogs fighting. One is a good dog who protects his master, doesn't tear up things etc,. and the other is an evil dog that tears up everything, and attacks the good dog. The dog that wins is the one you feed the most.
