Honestly you can use any litter. I buy the cheap stuff and add arm and hammer baking soda to it and it makes the cheap stuff like the expensive stuff. I use half a box for a clean litter. When you see it on special for $0.25, stock up!

Stay away from the ones that use a heavy perfume to cover any odor--the cats think it stinks to high heaven usually and won't want to use it very much.
I get the cheapest clay litter and use that. The box gets scooped (wet and dry stuff removed) first thing in the morning after I feed them, then again when I get home, and again just before I go to bed. If I see the surface disturbed (I usually use the scoop to flatten the litter out) then I scoop what's been deposited there right at that moment instead of waiting.
All used litter goes into an empty plasticized cat food bag, the top crimped over. I don't put it into the kitchen garbage. Once a night it's taken out to dump into the outside dumpster. We have five cats, and the house does not smell at all. Total scooping/litter box time for me is around 3 minutes a day, possibly less. It doesn't take a lot of time, you just keep an eye on when it's used and clean it in a few seconds.

RE:
What is the best kitty litter for multiple cats?
I'm looking for the best kitty litter for use in a household with 3 cats. Right now, I use Scoop Away, and have found it best out of all I have tried. I'm on a tight budget, and would love to find something cheaper that works as well, but I'm not willing to compromise performance for...

I can give you both - use wood stove pellets. You can pick them up for about $4.99 for 40lbs. And they work wonders with the odor. They're made of compressed sawdust and suck up all the moisture and eventually break down into sawdust. So when you dump the pan out it dumps out dry.
You can find them at most Home Depot's, Lowes and if you're in an area where people have pellet stoves some grocery stores, like Safeways in WA, where I pick up mine. Trust me - you'll never use anything else again.

Depends where you live,... I live in Western Canada and with a very multi-feline household use only Canadian Superstore's
"No Name" 20 kg. Clumping litter, it's better than others and equal to Scoop Away which I found too costly and seems to have less and use more.
This No Name brand surprised me being so good at clumping (and I'm fussy as heck), sells anywhere from $5.98 -$7.39 for large 20 kg. yellow bag.
(Just bght. another 100 kgs. yesterday, was on sale this wk. for $5.98,... yes, I loaded up my p.u. truck with 5 bags!)
