It's about what a used one is going for at a dealership with 120K miles. Look at Kelly Blue Book www.kbb.com
for values.
BUt yes, I would've kick his rear for blowing that much on a used car. But maybe that's just me.

Don't worry. The car will still lost for quite a long time without any problem. I owned a 1992 Toyota Corolla that lasted for over 200,000 miles until 2007. So i recently bought a 2007 corolla. If a corolla can last over 200,000 miles which is at the lowest end of Toyota scale, then a Lexus LS 400 should last over 200,000 at minimum. Definitely a 99 lex ls 400 should go for 80,000 miles more before it dies out. But the disadvantage is that a 08 corolla would still be going at 80,000 miles with many more miles ahead.
So for $14K there is WAY MORE longevity in the 08 corolla than a 99 lexus. For long run, its bad deal. Short run, only it maybe a fair deal.

I've owened 3 Lexus, and I think he will get a better resale price for a 1999 Lexus even with the miles, than he will if he bought a new car (which would be a very low end type) for that price range. They hold thier value very well and there are always people looking to buy one even with high miles for the status. He'll always get more value from a Lexus vs. the Corolla regardless of the miles. Two out of my three have over 100k miles and have had very few problems. They are well made and can take the miles vs. a cheap new car that is not built for long term use, and will be worth nothing in a very short time. If the Lexus checked out mechanically and is in good condition, I think he got a great deal. One of mine was a 2000, had 90k, was in show room condition. I wanted to buy a new one, so I sold it easily for 16k and put that towards my new one. I don't think some of the people answering have owned a Lexus.

He has made a mistake. The car will be expesnive to run but it should be reliable, even with 120,000.
The Lexus is a dream car to many, i would like one, and very nice to drive around in, bit un cool for a 20 year old tho!. Maybe he can part ex at the Toyota dealer for something more appropriate.
You must feel very disappointed that having saved for so long that the money has just been wasted. Maybe this is the real issue and not the choice of car

Lexus is made by Toyota, which is very very reliable, and as long as the general maintenance was/ and is kept up on this car, and it was not beat on a lot, there is not reason why your son cannot double the mileage on this vehicle. I just recently purchased a 2005 Honda Accord EX V6 coupe with Navi and 6 speed MT that came with 102K miles on it. This car cost me thousands and thousands less than the same thing with regular mileage which is about 70K. And I am very confident that this car could easily under my care last me until it hits 250K and quite possibly 300K miles.
So he probably could have done alot better by getting a new Corolla or Honda Fit or a Prius or something, but the Lexus is a very reliable car, and he is much happier with it, so all in all he could have done much worse.

A 120,000 mile Lexus is a better can than a new Corolla. Corolla has had way to many motor problems and burn oil. If you research this toyota was warrantee this engines to 100,000 miles because they are no good. He paid way to much for the lexus. kbb is terrible guide to go by- way to high. Average wholesale is 9,575 and average retail is 10,950 on MMR market report.
They NEVER NEVER NEVER have 3 days to return a car. If that was the case you could buy a car every 2 1/2 days and return it. NOT TRUE. Why do people think this is true. NEVER!!!
2 years from now that Lexus will be worth more than that Corolla. 2005 Toyota corolla is worth $8800.00

That car does have alot of problems from people I know having had engine/trans issues. I doubt he could have purchased a brand new toyota corolla for 14,000 out the door. Maybe an aveo or g5 or something. But how long ago did he purchase the car? and from a dealer or private party? if it was from a dealer he has 3 days to return the car. He got taken on the price also. Make him pay you back in full.

Technically, yes I agree with you. Maybe you should have mentioned your concerns to him before writing out the check. Now that he's bought the car and appears to have been ripped off to boot, it's too late. He will have to put up with the aging car problem and all maintenance issues himself. Lexus has a pretty good track record for reliable cars however and it's no big deal for cars to go over 100k miles anymore. If he keeps up with routine maintenance, he should be all right.
EDIT: Did he get a warranty with it? 3 or 6 months? If so, as long as it's a bumper-to-bumper warranty, he'll be OK if something should happen. After that, it's all on him. Yes, maintenance costs are expensive on Lexus and premium fuel too. However, most older cars require premium fuel to keep the knocks away.

Clearly, your son bought what he wanted.
I would get ticked too if my son did what your son did. Now the question is, will your foot the $ for the bill should his car break down. Keep feeling sorry for him and you'll keep dishing the money out and find yourself still complaining. Best thing you can do is let him from now on pay his own way and any money you give him make it a loan. Lots of people catch the bus to work and many do to save money. Your son needs to learn this.

The good news: It should still be a dependable car even at that mileage. It is a Toyota, afterall.
The bad news: I just looked up the value of a 1999 ls400, and your son paid about $3,000 too much for it.

Next time, have him do some research before he buys.

THE CHOICE WAS INDEED A WASTE OF HARD EARNED MONEY WHEN HE HAD THE CHANCE TO BUY A 2008 TOYOTA COROLLA WITH A FULL WARRANTY AND BOTH YOU AND HIM WOULD HAVE HAD NO WORRIES.
IT IS TOO LATE BUT I WOULD HAVE GONE WITH HIM AND IF HE DID NOT LIKE THE TOYOTA AS HE STATED THEN BOTH OF YOU COULD HAVE LOOK FOR SOMETHING ELSE.
THE LEXUS VEHICLES ARE VERY GOOD BUT THE REPAIRS WILL KILL HIM AND WITH 120,000 MILES THERE IS NO WAY OF TELLING WHAT WILL GO WRONG.
