It is only called as BREAST CANCER if the cancer is detected in and around Breast upto under arms.
The treatments for this cancer are-
1. Surgery by which they will remove the affected breast or area. By surgery only the tumor is removed and there are possibilitye of Cancer cells remaining in the remaining areas. for this -
2. Chemotherapy -Treatement by Chemicals or Medicines will be given. In this process also some cells may be left and hence
3. Radiation Therapy is given by which all the cells (cancerous and some non-cancerous cells also) will be destroyed and if the disease in the early stages, we can hope to get it cured.
Survival chances mainly depends on the stage of the disease and how far it has developed. Secondly she is very old (74 years) it has to be seen if she can withstand the treatments, as these treatments are supposed to have lot of adverse side effects. I have breast cancer and just started chemo after 4 surgeries. The problem is that each cancer and person and situation is very different. But the survival rate is very high these days-with treatment. The only way you can get answers is from her own doctors and her personal situation. One out of 8 women in our country gets breast cancer at some time in their lives. Standard treatment is to first cut it out, then chemo and radiation. That is in the early stages. In later stages there may be more. And aromatase inhibitors for people past menopause.
Also, there are different kinds of breast cancer, some more dangerous than others.
Good luck with your grandma-only her doctor can give you the answers for HER.

I'm not a doctor but I have a little experience in this area. If any cancer is caught early, there is a better chance of survival. Treatments can include chemo, radiation, and surgery. Your grandmother's doctors will be the best source of treatment ideas.
However, don't discount adding some holistic therapies as well. Lots of people beat breast cancer and lots don't. There are no guarantees.
Give your grandmother lots of love and support, enjoy every minute with her andtry not to worry too much.

Yes, it is.
It doesn't "require" chemotherapy but it is a treatment option, along with surgery and radiotherapy.
Well, she's fairly old; which means that her immune system would be weaker but it depends on the case. (My grandmother was younger that that when she died of breast cancer. I think she was 55.)
Cancer cases are usually classified as "low-risk" and "high-risk" categories as well as into stages (you should probably check your grandmother's doctor to get the details) but if she's healthy, a low-risk case, in an early stage, and willing to go through treatment, she probably has a good chance of making it.

my mom got breast cancer in her late 30's...she had to have it cut out and also go for chemotherapy. She lived for 11 years after it was first discovered but there is a good chance it will come back. With my mom it came back in different places and eventually was in her bones and she passed away :( love you mom
