my friend told me that there is a german made 9mm pistol that when fired, the bullet has the same velocity even underwater?

The Russians, not the Germans, have been making underwater pistols and rifles for some time now. They use a long, heavy, skinny bullet in a smooth bore barrel. This bullet, like the majority of Russian bullets, is seated in the ubiquitous 39mm case. The bullets themselves are not stabilized by rotation like normal bullets, but are dependent on drag to keep them stable. They only have a range of about 15m before they're moving too slow to be effective underwater.

On second thought, HK did produce a few 6-shot derringer pistols that were completely sealed, but they shot a normal 9mm FMJ bullet, and weren't appropriate for use underwater, but more as a pistol for water insertion teams. It's non-reloadable, and has to be sent back to HK to be recharged at a great expense to the user.

Most pistols won't even fire underwater, at least not more than once. Also, it is not possible for the same bullet to achieve the same velocity in the air as in the water due to the difference in the density of the different media it is being fired through. Water has much more resistance than air. Certainly a standard 9mm will NOT do this.

Ask your friend for more info. What make and model is this German pistol. What caliber is it. Is it really a firearm or somekind of pneumatic gun made to be fired underwater. What your friend may be trying to say is that there is a diver's gun that can achieve the same velocity underwater as a 9mm can fired in the air.

Due to the density of air vs water, very simply, it isn't possible.
Stop and think about the fact that when a bullet strikes a target, be it animal, vegitarian oops, or mineral like a flat wall, the bullet reacts by either slowing down, stopping or disentegrating; depending on the type of projectile used. From the mili-second the bullet leaves the barrel it starts slowing down its velocity. Another example would be a bow and arrow. As an arrow passes through a deer, for example, it slows down and comes to a stop. Shoot the same arrow at a 45 degree angle and it will travel hundreds of yards before it either hits the ground or another object in its path, stopping it instantly. Fire it into one of the new archery targets and it stops with just a few inches of penetration! Hope this helps.

Your friend is pulling your leg. Air and water have different densities, and so the pistol would have to modify the ammunition while firing it to be able to do that, and the gun hasn't been invented which can change the powder charge at the moment of firing.

This is malarkey. The density of water will slow down even the fastest moving bullet.

Impossible. Compare the drag coefficient's of air and water. Not gonna happen. Any bullet slows down very quickly in water.

Any Firearm even fired into water, let alone fired under water only penetrates to a depth of eight (8)* to twelve (12)* inches..**Does that answer your question?*

I personally do not think that is possible unless there is a thruster in the bullet... I mean, generally looking at in a physics perspective, when a mass goes through another mass, it is slows down.

I could be wrong though, but that is what I think in a physical way.
