Most of the time, when the question is asked, it's done out of politeness as a way to greet someone and show interest; one human being to another.
Sometimes, when you ask the question, the person that answers you wants to feel connected to another human. It may be the only time in a long time that someone asked and they do have something to say about how they feel. If you are ever the lucky recipient of an actual response, instead of feeling imposed upon, choose to act and feel like a true human being instead of being uncaring.
I hope you have a wonderful evening, full of useful responses!

great question- actually I do want to really know how people are doing when I ask- we are placed here on earth to love the Lord our God, with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, and love our neighbors as ourselves. If we are to love those around us, we have to care- because love is a verb. We have got to put our love into action or it means nothing- same thing when you say you will pray for someone- you must do it. It can be so easy to hear that someone is going through some hard times, and flippantly say, "I am praying for you"- then immediately walk away, and never do it. And sometimes since this question is asked so much the one being asked will just say "fine" because they really don't think the person cares. I pray that when I ask this, and tell people that I will pray, I really do!!

It is simply a way of being socially "polite". Also it gives the one that HEARS it an opportunity to give a long answer if that person feels that they NEED to do so. It gives the hearer a chance to ask for HELP without really FEELING like they are BEGGING for help. It even provides the person that asked the question in the first place a possible forum to speak for sympathy from the hearer,,if there is a NEED. Generally the hearer will respond by asking the same question to the original speaker. It can be a good way to initiate a dialog.

Sometimes, i mean it. like if I haven't seen someone around r/s for a while, I usually shoot them an e-mail and ask that very question. If I ask a friend that in person, I mean it. But, if it's that crazy guy down at the cobblestone gas station by where I live, it's kind of feeling him out to see if he is going to kill me or something that night.

they're subject concerns that ought to purely be have been given right here upon after hundreds of hundreds of trials. and needless to say, strict decrease desires to be in place. inspite of the easy actuality that, by actuality the muse of technological advice is often changing by new discoveries, we would desire to even have sympathy to the drug company besides. they don't seem miracle makers, they only attempt to make income by making use of making use of merchandising some element that they "think of of" might help human beings. think of of the international with out antibiotics and diverse drugs, what proportion human beings ought to might desire to die? If we agree that technological advice can be replaced, the drug company won't have an excuse of increasing drugs costs by actuality of regulation greater advantageous healthful.additionally if we examine out the different section that has used the socialist gadget it has slowed down and did not stay as much as its Utopian promise. No gadget is suitable yet open and loose industry is the spectacular available.

I think that exact same thing almost everytime I say it or someone says it to me, lol.
No I really dont care. Usually when I ask I dont really care that much either. Sure I hope they are doing good, but I dont really expect anyone to start pouring out their heart to me. I really dont think they care either when they ask me. Most of the time both people will just say fine or good anyways.
It just the little things we do to keep our society civilized I suppose.

It is just a common courtesy. If someone asked me how I was doing and then seemed really interested in the response, I would be a little freaked!

That's why I don't ask that. Too many times I've wasted time listening to someones aches and pains. Now when I want to say something in passing I say, "Hi... good to see you again!"
