Here is my dilemma. I am moving to the UK with my wife and kids who are British nationals and I am applying for the settlement visa. My family are already in the UK and are waiting for me there. We will be staying at her mother's house unfortunately for a short while until I find a job and our own house. I cannot apply for jobs as companies won't even look at me until I have a visa. I have the money for the visa and the airfare there and a little saved up. Not much money as I am supporting my family in the UK as well as myself here in TX. I don't want to apply for the visa and be turned down because I don't have enough assets. I am looking for a rough estimate on the amount of money needed so I know when to apply. I have looked everywhere for an answer and have been severly disappointed by the lack of information on this matter and any help is appreciated. Thank You

You are likely to have a problem satisfying the requirement that you and your wife have your own accommdation. I think you should take specialist advice about ways around this. By the way, your wife and children should be able to get benefits if necessary.

Perhaps the best thing would be if your wife could get work while her Mum looks after the kids, that way you'd have no problem with finances. You don't really need a lump sum, just able to show that you can support yourselves once here. For lump sums, they probably want enough for you to live on for at least a few months, and also they want to see that it is really your money, not just a short-term loan to get you through immigration.

Try looking on http://www.immigrationboards.com for good practical advice, loads of people there have been through the same, and there's some really well-informed stuff, much better than mine!

Good luck, it'll work out in the end.

if your wife is a British national you cannot be turned down if you satisfy all the requrements for a family member visa.
All the information you are looking for is on the Home Office website, including the application forms and the cost of each visa application.
If you haven't resided in the UK while being married to a British, you cannot get a settlement visa immediately, you'd get a 2 year family member visa and after it runs out you have to reapply for an indefinite leave to remain, if of course the regulations don't change by then...

The cost of the Visa is around £500 ($1100) and this is non refundable in case of refusal. You will be obliged to offer lots of documentation yourself and from your family in the Uk also. You have to realise it is not an easy matter and you MUST prepare your case to the letter. The rules and everything you need to know is on the Embassy Website which you can access online,by typing British Embassy in your browser. You will get the Visa providing you follow the rules to the letter...Good Luck..

at the moment it costs £500. To find out the exact cost go to the website of the British Embassy where you will be applying and that will be the Embassy where you have residency.
