I am trying to understand God's personality. What makes him happy and mad. I can't understand praying. I think only a selfish tyrant would want you to pray to him. Just follow the commandments and make it like a philosophy. It seems to make more sense that way.

The God theism promotes is a very self-conscious God that really needs people's praise; who only gives if you really beg to him, who is unforgiving and scornful. In Genesis in the bible there is a sentence about God's low self esteem - which seems to express a popular consensus in all religion. Personally, if there is a God, I would have no reason to assume He wants me to get and my knees and plead. There's no logical explanation. There's only religious declaration of fact: that He is swayed by prayer.

God loves us and wants to have a relationship with us. A real and personal one. Prayer is really just communicating with God. He also wants to bless us and guide us through this life, and as He knows us better than we know ourselves, and He knows all things including what the future holds--it is our prayers that invite Him to intervene in our lives and bring about the good plans He has for us. And in hard times, He is able to make a way where there seems to be no way. God is a gentleman and won't interfere in our lives without our permission. And He is a good God--and our heavenly Father who loves us more than we can ever hope to realize in this life.
I believe God has a good plan for each of us, but if we don't make Him a part of our life---if we exclude Him--His hands are effectively tied. So it is up to us to choose to seek God--to ask for His guidance and help. He'll never turn us away. But He'll never butt in uninvited either.

People ask us all the time why we read the Bible. So people miss this stuff - you know, what God is like, what's His opinion on things, what does He like and not like. We get it all the time.

We get a pretty good idea what God thinks about things.

God wants us to pray because it's an act of faith - and He's keen on faith. It's what makes us different from the rest of the world. While the rest of the world trusts in other gods, their new Tai bo exercises, their new diet, the car they've always wanted, looking younger, pets, etc, We are trusting Him. And that means He reacts to what we do when we are considering Him.

Let me explain this to you. A Christian is like a lake. And when we do acts of faith it's like a river flowing out of us. And God reacts by keeping us ( the lake ) full. And so as long as we have Him in focus, doing the things His Spirit desires, we are kept full.

That's why we pray. It's for us, God doesn't need it, but it's what He wants us to do.

muslimah has given an eloborate answer. yet that would not answer the question, who does God pray to. GOD being all-powerful desires no one or not something to look for to wish.era. In hinduism God is known to be of somebody or something that's neither created nor destroyed. he or she or it existed constantly. The question who created God would not upward push up. Logical thinking can't clarify GOD as he's meaningless. God is attributed to be infinite.by making use of definition in case you could degree something that's infinite then it is going to become constrained. All this confusion upward push up because of the fact God is known to be a Father determine overseeing us with contempt and able to sentence us to an eternal hell. As we can't see our own eyes with out an help, how do we see the God with out an help. If our thought is sufficiently huge we are able to even see God if he or she Or it render it self to such inspection. till then each and everything is theory of clever use of words.

Are there people in your life that you love, that you enjoy, that you care about? If so then you should be able to relate to why God wants us to pray to Him. It is communication from a loved one. If you are a parent then you can understand that having a child who simply does what you tell him without talking to you, opening up, sharing their thoughts, hopes, and dreams would be heartbreaking. If you have ever loved someone than you probably know what it's like to want to share in what's going on in their life, to comfort and encourage them. God asks us to pray not as a chore but as a way of keeping in touch with Him because He loves us, He cares, He wants to share in our lives.

Praying was not mandated by God; but man.

If we understood what "makes God happy", I think most of us would be trying to "make him happy". I know I would. If I could have made God "happy", maybe my father and brother wouldn't have died. Maybe I would win the lottery. Maybe I could win a "jackpot" at the casino. Maybe there wouldn't be millions of people starving. Maybe parents, wives, and children wouldn't have lost their lives in the Holocaust.

Following the "commandments" does not guarantee one a "happy" life; one without conflict or tragedy.

Biblically, God has been a "tyrant". He banished Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden just because they ate of the supposed "Tree of Life". He destroyed the world by flood because the inhabitants weren't in conjunction with his will. Sodom and Gomorrah were reduced to ashes because of their citizen's behavior. Jesus, his only son, was crucified to redeem the world; yet, Jesus' descendants, the Jews, were exiled and wandered the land for 40 years.

I think it is safe to say that God is someone who demands respect; and, if he doesn't get it, is willing to wreak severe havoc upon the world.

Who told you that God wants your prayers? God doesn't want anything, He is OK, but if you want to have a good life, then you should do some self searching, and that comes from the heart, you should do it, so you will know if you are doing the right thing in order to be better, to get along better in life, to have peace of mind, to be happy, He doesn't care if you pray or not, praying is just a word, praying is searching your conscience, and it doesn't have to be to God, it can be to yourself.

I believe that you misunderstand prayer. Prayer is simply speaking with God in the boundary of a personal relationship. He wants us to have that relationship the same as Adam and Eve had when they and God walked in the garden together. We need this Father/child relationship that He gives to those who accept His Son Jesus, and therefore become His adopted child.

God's children can come to Him with requests, with praise and with closeness. This is the benefit of this loving relationship.

I read a story once. It was about how one day a guy moved out of his mother's house and she never heard from him again. She was devastated. I think maybe God is a little like that. It isn't just praying to worship. He wants to hear from you, He wants to help you, He wants to know how you are doing. That's what prayers are for right? And you don't have to pray. But I don't know. It's nice, always having Someone to talk to . . . Someone who will listen but not hurt you or betray you with the knowledge gained.
