Tolerance is not a virtue and it is not something we want to teach or practice.

To tolerate means to endure, just like when you can't do anything about the heat because your A/C is out of order and you must tolerate the discomfort.

We do that with noise, with music we dislike, with people and their ideas. We do not respect what we tolerate. We do not admire people and idea we must tolerate. If we are forced to telerate beyond our ability we typically react abusively. Tolerance and intolerance are on the same measuring stick. If we can't get away, eventually tolerance becomes intolerance.

A good question to ask ourselves is: Why do we tolerate if we don't have to? Often is a poltically correct thing to do. But for every politically correct thing we do, we lose a bit of our honesty, our integrity, and we increase our hyprocrisy.

So, ideally, use diplomacy and gentleness to say to someone: can you turn down that music, I don't seem totolerate it very well. Or, I have to disagree with what you just said, please don't take offense, I am telling you my view on this so that you know where I stand.

In the moral sense, the less we tolerate, the more honest and respected we are.

I see marriage as a religious belief that is between a man and a woman, of any race. However, if a gay or lesbian couple want a civil union, that will be legally seen as a marriage, then I'm all for that. That should also be extended to anyone, gay or straight, who wants to be "married" but does not want the religious aspect.
