There are degrees of murder, and there are various circumstances involved in said crimes. Not all actions deserve permanent punishments.
That said, the system is quite flawed. It's incomprehensible that someone can kill another person in cold blood and get out in 5 years, while someone else can be found in possession of drugs, or caught shoplifting, or otherwise convicted of similar petty incidents, and go to jail for decades.
The crimes and punishments are very much imbalanced.

The main reason is because murder is a broader concept than you probably have in your mind.
First, you can be found guilty of murder if you are "merely" an accomplice to a murder. While some of these accomplices are just as bad as the shooter or worse, some of them are significantly less culpable. In the vernacular, they simply got caught up with the wrong crowd.
Second, you can be found guilty of felony murder which simply means that someone died in the course of a felony. For example, if a bank guard has a heart attack during a robbery, the robbers can be charged with felony murder.
Third, when multiple people are involved in a murder, having a sentencing range that allows a sentence less than life, allows you to plea bargain with one of the non-shooters to get the rest of the defendants (the opportunity to be paroled in 15 years as opposed to 25 years can be a big incentive to turn State's evidence).
Finally, some times there are facts which, while not qualifying as a legal justification (in whole or in part) for a murder, do justify a somewhat less punishment. For example, the quintessential case of someone killing the person that raped their daughter.
My own personal belief is that most murderers should do a substantial sentence. However, unless we are going to change the legal definition of murder, there are some that deserve something a little bit less than life.

For now, that's only the legal sentences that were put into law. because the government officials right now doesn't implement new system of punishment for the violation of murder. And just come to think of it, there are millions of murderers here in our planet living, and giving death for a punishment would not help lessen the population of murderers.
But i guess, thats the only solution for diminishing the events.
Hoping that those bastards will be threatened by death sentence. Those idiots has nothing to do. We don't exactly know why are they doing it. Very hard to explain and understand such creatures. If you happen to see one, kill them first before they kill you.

In what state can someone get only 5 years for murder? In Oklahoma, the punishment for 1st degree murder if death, life without parole or life. I have never heard of anyone being convicted of 1st degree murder anywhere in the US and only getting a 5 year sentence.

I agree. In the UK a mandatory life sentence means fifteen years...so if a twenty year old kills 3 people and gets 'life' he could be out in fifteen years and at 35 would have a good 40 years left if he reaches the life expectancy age....whereas the people he murdered have no life. It's crazy

many people have been convicted of murder that were later proven innocent. a very famous case was rubin "hurricane" carter. the justice system in the US is a fair one if correctly used. but many times the wrong person and an innocent person is convicted. no man should ever have a say in whether another man is put to death.

THE BEST SYSTEM I HAVE SEEN IS CALLED MANDATORY DETERMINIS SENTENCING.
WHEN YOU COMMIT A CRIME, THAT CRIME HAS A SEVERITY TO IT. 1 FOR MISDEMEANORS, 2 FOR D CLASS FELONY, 4 FOR C, 6 FOR A CLASS ETC. EACH EVENT IN YOUR LIFE OF CONVICTION RAISES THE STANDARDS FOR SENTENCING. THE POINTS STAY WITH YOU FOR LIFE.
YOU GET ARRESTED AGAIN AND POINTS ADDED.
A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF POINTS EQUALS SO MUCH TIME TO DONE?
EACH TIME RECONVICTED DOUBLES THAT TIME.
THE CRIMINAL CANNOT BLAME ANYONE BUT THEMSELVES ABOUT DOING TIME.
AS TO YOUR ORIGINAL QUESTION MURDER ITSELF HAS VARYING DEGREES. ADVERSE TO NEGLIGENT HOMICIDE OR VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER WHICH WAS USUALLY DROPPED FROM A MURDER CHARGED ORIGINALLY.
THUSLY EACH SENTENCE IS DIFFERENT FROM THE DISCRETIONARY DECISION OF THE ARRESTING OFFICER TO THE PROSECUTOR TO THE JURY TO THE JUDGES SENTENCE.
I HAVE KNOWN MANY WHO HAVE KILLED SOMEONE AND ARE IN PRISON FOR LIFE. SOME I FEEL WERE JUSTIFIED IN WHAT THEY DID (MAN RAPED HIS DAUGHTER AND HE KILLED HIM) BUT IT WAS THOUGHT OUT AND THEN HAVING A THOUGHT PATTERN TO KILL THE PERSONS CRIME BECAME THAT OF A PREMEDITATED MURDER.
ANOTHER WAS DRIVING ON NEW YEARS AFTER DRINKING AT PARENTS HOUSE WITH FAMILY, THEY WERE GOING HOME. A LADY WAS CROSSING THE STREET AS HE CAME TO THE INTERSECTION THE LIGHT. FOR HIM THE LIGHT WAS GREEN AND THE LADY WAS CROSSING AGAINST THE LIGHT. HE DID NOT SEE HER AND KILLED HER. BECAUSE HE WAS DRINKING THE JURY SAID HE WAS IMPAIRED AND GAVE HIM 5 YEARS. CASE WAS DROPPED FROM A MURDER ORIGINAL CHARGE TO THAT OF A VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER CASE.
NOW YOU BE THE JUDGE OK?

wicked indifference is a homicide fee. He became into mentioned to no longer have unprotected intercourse. perfect protection might desire to have been an insanity protection be they do no longer win as in lots of cases as you will be able to think of. Canada won't kill him besides.
