a couple of thoughts........

drugs are usually at the bottom of gun/knife crime.
prohibition in the us was the cause of organised crime in the 1930's
tobacco in prison is used as a currency to fund drugs and other related crime

a simple conclusion

where something is regulated controlled or illegal we call persons who would want to make profit from the situation criminals, they will stop at nothing to make easy profits from their enterprises.

if drugs were made affordable, and readily available in say chemists (as is the case in a particular location in Switzerland), in pubs, or in tobacconists (taxed of course by the government).

i believe drug related crime would come to a sudden and dramatic end.

if drugs were on the same level as fags and booze there would still be crime but not as violent as it is today

The Swiss require all homes to have guns. The populace is the militia. They have very few gun crimes. Guns are not the cause of gun crime.

In the US, there is a constant controversy about gun possession. The NRA would have us believe that the Constitution requires the government to allow private citizens to own guns. If this were in the same context as in Switzerland, their point would be valid.

But, in the US, guns are considered to be entertainment. They are easily obtained by any determined person in any city. And they are often obtained for the sole purpose of killing other people.

You can't ban guns. Then, only the bad guys would have them, just like they have so many other banned items. Bad guys ignore laws. Laws are not the answer.

The only positive social change would be the mass adoption of a common religious credo that teaches that murder is wrong. Instead, we have a mass religious credo that teaches that people are the end result of random chemistry and evolution. The more we succeed, as a culture, to convince our population that humans are no more special than ants and mice, the less valued human life becomes and the less reason there is to believe that murder is wrong.

We, as a nation, have convinced ourselves that murder is illegal, but that means it is bad only when you get caught. Which so often doesn't happen. We have taught our distressed children that they can get real attention and fame if they shoot their fellow students. We have taught our youth efficient ways to kill on the battlefields of other nations, and taught them not regret their actions. We have desensitized our children to violence and murder by displaying it to them in films, on TV, and creating it in 3-D within their favorite video games.

We are a nation of violence. Period.

We are a nation of inept legal process.

We are a nation of atheist laws.

What else would you expect the result to be?

There seems to be a strong correlation between the rise of organised international drug syndicates who target communities and who compete with each other for their share of turf and the increase of offences involving possession of firearms especially among the young and disaffected. Unlike 'normal' crimes organised drug dealing and distribution needs the constant input of maximum credible force to intimidate or eliminate the opposition ie the the frequent deployment of firearms. This cannot but have a spill-over effect into the young people who live in the deprived ghettos of our society who see drugs enterprise as a glamorous and successful lifestyle. Until we can successfully tackle drug crime, gun-crime will always be a clear and present danger.

Death by execution of their own weapon would put a stop to it pretty quickly. But on a more practical note how about raising council taxes etc sky high and the only way for this to be lowered is to have gun crime come down or any crime for that matter to come down,Iam pretty sure the criminals will get shopped -you know who they are but are to scared to speak out because of reprisals,do you feel safe anymore?.Take action now before you become the next victim

Stop the manufacturing and exporting of weapons period!! They spend millions of dollars on trying to stop the illegal drug trade and you never hear about the law enforcement agencies finding the people who sell illegal weapons!! Once in awhile you'll hear about them finding some guns but this is just the tip of the iceberg. The laws have to change making it illegal to make guns. There should be stronger laws to help law enforcement officers make the arrests to stop these people from making them. It's a start !! This is my dream!!!! As long as people believe that guns are a right not a privilege there will be more death from guns.

As far as in European countries like France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Czech, Slovakia, Italy and so on, most of Criminals have guns so does all Police Officers, and it is still as safe as in UK in many of these countries, I do not think you should worry, as most of criminals have guns so they can shoot each other or shoot to Police officers.
Usually it is that none will shoot at you unless you will draw the gun, so civilians should not be worried about gun crime.
You can be the same mugged with the use of knife on the streets as with the use of handgun so I do not really think that raise of guns in really serious matter for the safety of communities.
I think that if Politicians will think that there is too many criminals carrying guns then they will just arm all Police Forces.

These are some facts that should make it easier for you that Well Armed countries have lower crime rates than UK
Please look at US where it is quite easy to obtain a gun for civilian

Remove firearms from the culture. What are they needed for; spot, hunting, protection?

Register all firarms. If a gun is used in the commision of a crime make it a capital offence. Suspend the users rights. Lock them up and throw away the key.

MPs? Midlands? Is this a question from England or Australia?

The problem is that it may be too late to do a lot of things.

You can't ban guns, for they will find a way in.

You can't give harsher and harsher sentences for those who commit a crime with a gun, for the criminals will feel that perticular person messed up and they won't

You may not even find a MP who wants to take that provocative of a stance

No ifs or buts, 7 years for carrying a gun, 10 years if it is used as a threat, carrying means intent to use, no remission on sentence, now THAT would make them think twice.

straightforward, once you ban weapons in simple terms CRIMINALS get/have weapons. There relatively isn't any experience banning something, all banning does is create a black marketplace for what ever is being banned. from time to time who cares, yet on the subject of weapons oh hell no. besides in america of a we've a Constitutional precise to show arms. i think in the united kingdom they do no longer, yet I guess they need they did.
