You don't necessarily have to use light colours for your room to appear larger, their are many ways for it to seem bigger.
I would like to suggest that "if you are allowed" to paint out the wall to wall cabinet. For optimal appearance of space you would paint it the same colour as the wall, or for affect and a bit of visual interest you should paint it a few shades lighter or darker than the wall. If you like the blue curtains you could paint the cabinet beige, the walls tan and have blue accents (bed spread, decorative pieces). Or the cabinet tan the walls blue/ or just one wall behind your bed blue, etc.

Since your room is small, start by painting the ceiling white. Prepare the surface well--use a bit of wallboard mud to smooth out lumps and bumps [your ceiling has to look REALLY good, because everybody sees it]--take your time with it and do two or three coats of latex ceiling paint. Why ceiling paint? Because it has a heavier 'body' to it and will stick to your roller, so you won't end up covered in paint. I always use a roller with a fairly deep pile [rough or irregular surfaces] because it "pulls" the paint out to a nice pebbly texture.
Now take a look at your walls. You probably want to keep the colour light--just a hint of colour. If you're not going to change your curtains, try a very light blue grey mist in a flat or eggshell finish. Remember that latex paints darken a bit when dry, so always go for the lighter colour or the room will feel "closed in."
One hint: if your room has low a ceiling, make your colour separation about six or eight inches from the ceiling [measure from the floor, or use a level to do this!]. That is, extend the white ceiling paint down your walls a bit. This will have the effect of softening the corners of the room, making it look bigger. Wait 'till your ceiling paint is well-dried, then use painter's green [NOT regular masking tape!] to mask a nice, straight line around your room, and bring the wall paint up to that line. If you want, you can add a very thin wallpaper trim [say, about 2" wide or less] to cover the colour separation line.

If you have low lighting, it's a good idea to have at least a couple of the walls a light colour. I'm imagining brick red for the wall with the curtains and off-white for the other 2 walls, but since I can't actually see the room I don't know if that would look cute or horrid.

I would go with a very light neutral color especially if your room is small. Paint the ceiling white. You want to stick to light colors without too much going on or your room will appear even smaller. Use accent pillows to tie it all together using the color of your walls, curtains, with a hint of the brown cabinet in it. Then try and do the same with the rest of your accents. Sticking to those three colors and it will tie your room together beautfiully. Have fun! ;-)

Sky blue, muted, not too light, and not too dark, and your room will seem larger, endless almost. Almost a washed denim color. It's a happy color, too. Add another accent lamp to open it up further. Don't go white, it will always be cold feeling. I go for mid tones on the walls because the walls just seem to cease to be so "wallish" if you know what I mean. Medium purple is a very soothing color for walls. Nothing garish, mind you. Unless you are looking to recreate the 60's or 70's.
Good luck!

Well yes this is very important. So what I would do first is pick all the colors you definitely don't want. Then you can rule those out and just look at what is left over.
Light blue is a very good color, it favors meditation and calmness.
Go to Home Depot or Lowes where they have the color codes and just stand there. Open yourself up and you will find the moment that says Yes! this is the one.
And stop worrying. It's just paint.

If your room is small stick to light pastel colours, it will give the illusion of more light and space, go for pale yellow or duckegg (between light green and light blue), or cream. If you put a bigger mirror on the wall, it will also make it look bigger

If your room has low light, you should choose a brighter colour that is still neutral. Since you have a blue curtain, I would suggest a very pale green or perhaps a light blue or a bluish-purple.

The blue limits your color choices. off whites always work well as one color. with the blue and the brown, think yellows, peaches, other blues to contrast, perhaps pick up colors from a comforter. Ultimately, this is all personal preference, but see if you can get sample colors for a small fee to try out the combinations in your setting and lighting.

Any colour that you like but choose a lighter colour make your room bigger.
Not sure about the ceiling height but keep it white to raise the height visually. Some vertical stripes and decor will work wonders too.
Add some mirrors. Will help to brighten the room and also to increase the size tremendously.
