A down coat is definitely warmer than a polyester one. I'm speaking from experience. If it's bitterly cold out and I have a choice of which coat to wear, I'm getting into the down one. Ever wonder how birds stay warm in the winter? They are wearing polyester feathers, LOL.

Definitely down is warmer than polyester.

However one needs to be somewhat wary of what they are purchasing.
Some products will say “down filled”. When you look closer it really has only a small percentage of actual down. Remainder is filled with other types of filler.

The best will say 100% prime northern goose down. I’ve down insulated weatherproof coveralls. Vests. And weatherproof parkas. Have used the coveralls in temperatures
of –30F and remained comfortable.

Negative side-as mentioned if the down gets wet. Then it is really a complete detriment.
Should that happen? Place in a cloths dryer with temp set of delicate or fluff. Will bring it back to original conditions.

No . They are equal
One of the laws of thermodynamics states that there is no such thing as cold only the absence of heat .
Sleeping bags do not generate warmth they prevent heat loss. As long as you can prevent your body from losing heat you will stay warm .It's that simple -and that complicated

I'm sure that the late great Colin Fletcher included a detailed explanation about down vs poly somewhere in it.

warmth is exactly the same. down will be lighter for the same warmth as the polyester and will pack smaller and last far longer. polyester is much more weather proof than down so you may be better of in wet conditions than with down.

Yes -- if it is dry. I hear that polyester does better if things are wet.
