This is not the driver of the vehicle. It is my 11 year old cousin. So why did they do an autopsy?
(Charges are pending against the step-mother)

an autopsy is done to determine the real cause of a death.

most states require an autopsy if the person died from unnatural causes. died when not attended to by a physician or under a physicians care.

did your cousin die from injuries sustained from crash, negligence of no child restraint / or not buckled up, heart attack from fright, internal injuries etc.?

who was at fault, could the accident have been prevented, could the death have been prevented?

most of these answers will be brought out from the accident investigation and the autopsy itself as to the actual cause of death, done by the state pathologist coupled with the report.

be supportive of step mother in her time of this crisis. some become suicidal placing blame upon themselves when it may not have been.

Assuming they want to file criminal charges against the driver at fault, one of the things they will have to prove is that the death was definitely caused by the accident.

They have to do the autopsy to know exactly what caused the death, to rule out an allergic reaction, prior injuries that contributed to a death that wouldn't have happened but for those prior injuries, etc.

In most states an autopsy is done any time a person dies of something other than natural causes. It's just routine.

some states require an autopsy on all deaths not in a hospital, and with an attending doctor. also need proof that crash caused death.

Whenever there is reason to suspect a death is due to other than natural causes, the state is obligated to attempt to determine the true cause. There may be reason to suspect it's possible the crash was staged in order to cover up his murder.

Because they may be trying to prosecute your step-mother and need to prove that the death was caused by injuries related directly to the crash.

in all suspicious deaths, they do an autopsy... and with her being 11, the death sounds pretty suspicious...

because they didn't die of a known or existing condition...or to simply put it..if they didn't die in a hospitall they need to be examined for cause.
