RID and NIX will work, but you have to follow the instructions meticulously. Once you have applied the solution to the hair, you let it sit for a few minutes. You then have to comb through every strand of hair pulling them off the hair. Honestly, it's best to use the comb to break them loose from the scalp and then use your fingernails to pull them the rest of the way off. You need to do this in very small sections. The process will take hours!

Once you have done that, you need to wash and DRY all bed linens and even stuffed animals. You need to wash the coverings on your couch cushions and everything. The heat is what kills them. If there are stuffed animals that just take the beating of a machine wash and dry, tie them up in a plastic bag and sit them outside for up to 2 weeks. Eventually, the bugs will smother and die.

Once that is all done, you will then have to wait one week and reapply the RID or NIX solution and do the process one more time. The solution (nor anything else) can kill the eggs. 1 week will give any left over eggs time to hatch so that you can catch the bugs. You may have to reapply one more time, but that should do the trick.

Anyone can catch them, getting rid of them is the hard part.

To help prevent them in the future, spray hair with hairspray a few times over the day. It's not fool proof, but it does help fend them off a little.

Hope this helps. I feel for you truely!

Nix Head Lice

Shaving your head is an overwhelmingly drastic solution and totally unnecessary.

Adults and nymphs are only able to survive for 2-3 days off the host in optimal conditions.

Under normal circumstances however this is more likely to be measured in hours rather than days as the adult louse is highly susceptible to dehydration and will quickly starve.

Wash pillowcases and sheets as a precaution, but a nit that falls out attached to a hair needs the warmth of the scalp to hatch. Without this, it will simply die. The chances of it finding its way back to that scalp are zero.

It is more important to make sure there is no live lice on the head than there is on the floor or furnishings.

The bagging of items such as toys and personal belongings is a good idea, but there is absolutely no need to do this for weeks at a time. 48 hours is absolutely ample as the louse will be a shriveled skeleton without food or more importantly – hydration.

Using pesticide bombs also unnecessarily expose your family to dangerous chemicals. Eggs can survive away from the host for up to 7 days but will not hatch without the warmth of a human host. With this in mind it is fairly obvious that compulsive cleaning is also unnecessary.

No chemical head lice treatment is legally allowed to be labeled as 'safe' as every insecticide is a poison. Every pesticide preparation has the potential to do serious damage depending on the individual.

Lindane for example is a known carcinogen and is now banned in 52 different countries. Yet it is still used in more than 6 million prescriptions in the US. Google 'Jesse's Story Head Lice' for more. All lice killing pesticides are a poison and have the potential to cause serious damage, even if used as directed.

Ovide contains Malathion (or Maldison as it is know in NZ and Australia). This is a highly toxic derivative of nerve gas which works by disrupting the chemical reactions in the lice's (and our) nervous system.

If a chemical lice treatment does not work once it is not going to work twice, in fact the lice that live will breed into a whole new batch that are resistant to that chemical.

Read these articles and try to find a natural remedy containing Neem oil as this renders the lice unable to breed therefore making it impossible for them to build up a resistance.

Good luck, we've been there.

When my daughter kept bring home these pest from school what I did was clean her hair with a head lice product. I then went though her hair with a nit comb using sunlight (or other bright light) to get out what I could. If on your own just keep combing with it over and over. Then everyday for one week I used olive oil to coat her hair then covered with shower cap. What this did was kept the hair a bit greasy so if something was left it would have a hard time laying more eggs in her hair. I left it on for about a half hour then washed out as normal. It gave her hair a beautiful shine. This seemed to do the trick. If you find you hair is to greasy do it every other day.
Also make sure you wash in hot water all pillows and blankets. Vacuum everything!! Even your car head rest and couch.
I hope you are able to kick this in the butt.

1. You have to treat the WHOLE house. Wash bedding in hottest water possible, dry on high heat in dryer. treat furniture with a lice killing spray ( walmart has a good off brand one ), bag up any toys or bedding for at least a week if not able to wash them. REPEAT this in 7 to 10 days.

2. Cheap mayonise applied generously in hair , put on a shower cap, and sleep in it. Wash out in morning, then comb out nits and dead lice in a.m. ( yes it's gross but it works)

3. Get some tea tree oil and mix a generous amount with a clarifying shampoo. Use daily. This is more of a preventive step, but it helps. Or mix tee tree oil with water in a spray bottle and spray on hair.

You have to retreat everything in 7 to 10 days. Then again in 7 to 10 more days. Don't share combs, brushes, hats. etc.
Your doctor can also write a rx for a prescription strength shampoo.

You can listen to all those other answers and do everything that they tell you to do. That is fine, but you are still going to have them and have heck getting the nits out of the hair, I know and I promise you that! I have been down this road myself. What I am going to tell you will work on getting rid of the head lice and the nits!!! My daughter had hair down to the middle of her back and she got them from visiting her dads. I fought them for a long time until a friend told me how to get rid of them and it worked and it is CHEAP!!!! HOW TO GET RID OF HEAD LICE AND THE NITS!!!!!!!!!!! Ok, first you will need the following items: Vaseline Goop Hand Cleaner (not the gritty stuff..this is like for the laundry) Your favorite shampoo Your favorite conditioner Now, you do not have to cut any hair at all. First, use the vaseline and rub the scalpe very good with it, leave it in for about 10 to 15 minutes. This is what is killing the lice and it is also breaking up the "glue" that is holding the nits (eggs) on the hair shaft. Now after you have left the vaseline in for that amount of time, start working in the hand cleaner. This might take a lot as what you are doing at this point is breaking up the grease that is in the vaseline. When you think that the vaseline is broke down enough, shampoo the hair with your shampoo. Rinse the shampoo out of your hair. If you still feel the vaseline, put more hand cleaner in your hair and work it in really good and then shampoo your hair again. Repeat this process until you no longer feel the vaseline in your hair. Also while you are doing this, you are washing the dead lice out as well. Shampoo your hair for the last time and rinse out the shampoo and then use your conditioner. And then rinse that out as you would normally do. Now towel dry your hair, you can use a blow drier if you wish. But when you are dying your hair comb threw it with any comb or brush and the dead nits will fall out as the hair dries. Your head lice and nits are gone!! Now all you have to do it just treat your bedding and what have you. I am not making this up by no means, but like I said you can try all those other ones that everybody told you about and try this one last if you want, but once you do this, they are GONE!!

I don't know of any other products you can use. But I know that you need to wash and sanitize like your entire house. Throw away any brushes used wash your sheets and stuff basically just do a real good cleaning otherwise your never going to get rid of them. It's probably that your missing some of the eggs when you get them out or there on something in your house not that the products don't work.

They're probably still in the house. You need to clean all the furniture with something that will kill lice. You also need to check the headrest on the auto seat, the pillows on the bed, etc. It's not just a matter of getting them off your body, you have to get them out of the entire house, or they'll get back on you.

You have to wash all the bedding, combs and brushes, etc. Make sure the product you purchase kills the lice AND the eggs, get a kit that comes with the spray, for those things that are difficult to launder/clean.
