I can't believe this is really happening. As a parent I am outraged that a school would take it upon themselves to do something like this without the parents consent.

Yes outraged, yet these are the parents that end up with a 12 year old and a grandchild. Its unfortunate that children are having sex at such young ages, however it is happening and its not because they are handing out birth control its because no one is talking to them about it. The problem is when it is up to the parent to provide birth control and abstinence talks it doesn't get done. Think of it this way, most children at the age of twelve don't really think about the consequences to their actions so they will have sex whether or not birth control is provided its a question of whether or not they are protected and what the values that you have instilled in them (though it doesn't always work). Personally as a mother I would rather birth control be handed out and try to teach my children the benefits of abstinence then just trying to teach them and them not listening(as many children do) and ending up a grandma. I guess you have to pick the greater of the two evils and face the facts teaching kids only about abstinence is not working.

Clearly you don't have all the information. Children DO need the parents' consent in order to be treated by the school health center. Granted, it sucks that if parents don't want their kids on birth control they can't receive any other health services from the school either, but the fact remains that the parents do have some say in the matter.

well i think if the parents were doing a better job teaching their children about sex instead of turning a blind eye to it and pretending it doesn't exist while the media industry teaches our young girls that they should be "sexy" at the age of 10 the school wouldn't have to. it's not like the school is forcing these young girls to take birth control they just have it there if they feel they need it and they wouldn't need it if they had a better foundation built by their parents teaching them the difference between right and wrong.

This is just in Portland, isn't it? I know it's causing a big uproar, and it's great that you're concerned, but realize that there are kids out there that don't have that kind of concern or guidance. I would rather see a young girl on birth control than a young girl at the abortion clinic.

No but then again she is only 8. While it should be the parents place, I wouldn't think is such a bad thing, esepcially when most parents think theior child will never do that. Maybe it will cut down on teen pregnnacy (not bashing teen moms. I was one myself)

That program was going on when I was in school over 5 years ago. It is a big deal, but it's better than your child ending up pregnant and they also provide condoms and do a pap, which are all good things. Trust me, if your daughter wants to have sex she will. Whether you like it or not, atleast they are preparing her. And there is nothing you can do about it.

Would you rather her bring home a positive pregnancy test? Think about the alternative.

Teach her about the birth control, about her body and encourage her to be safe and responsible whenever she makes the choice to have sex.

Answer to your question - no.

And thank you to frigginhilarious above; I could not agree with you more. I'm a parent myself and I refuse to act like a victim. Parents need to be parents and not thier kid's friend.

Totally with you on this. They bring home a 100 things for you to sign everyday, and suddenly something this important you have not control over. Unbelievable.

Child molesting hasn't been made legal in my state yet. No one under the age of 16 can legally consent to sex. Having sex with anyone under the age of 14 is considered child sexual battery (child molesting). Providing contraceptives or other support to allow or enable a child to be molested makes you just as guilty as the molester legally.

Do these people realise that its not normal for children that young to want to have sex? The child is either being forcefully molested or coerced and manipulated. Most children under 14 who get pregnant are impregnated by a male in his 20s.

Child molesting hasn't been legalized where I am.
