the first answer is correct, it's a pepperbox, made in the mid 1800s, fires all four at once normally, not very popular, few made, or practical, even though pretty cool in concept. the revlover was the standard by far. it was for very close range, like with in 20 feet or less, it was basically a very short barrel shotgun or scatter gun . one time deal, no time to reload. it is not a derringer, a derringer is a tiny concealable pistol, some had two barrels, but they where tiny calibre, and shot a "ball" shot, the pepper box shot a "ball" also but for a shot gun effect, the derringer was very small calibre rarely over a .22,and pretty useless if more than 4 feet away. give the first guy the 10 pts he got it in alot fewer words.

They are real. My dad carried one as a back up for years. I'll have to get with him to find out who makes it.

*edit*
Since you asked, nukeman, he was with the US Fish & Wildlife Service. Now, if you can get up and stop rolling on the floor for a minute, I'll school you. You see, you moron, the barrels are fixed. It breaks over like a shotgun to reload it.

This isn't to detract from what you other guys said about the COP gun being a 357, but the one the old man carried was a .22. You were right on the money about it not being very reliable. He carried it pretty much to shoot snakes, so a missfire wasn't a big problem.

I have not seen the movie but the four barrel handgun you describe is called a: Pepperbox. They are from the 1800s with a few 'modern' designs popping up now and then. The last one was known as COPS & was a stainless steel four barrel pistol in .357 Magnum. I looked at one but determined that it was too bulky for concealed carry and otherwise simply impractical.

Best.

Sounds like an old gun called a pepperbox gun. Worked like a revolver but the rotating cylinder was part of the barrel, unlike today's revolvers which only have one barrel.

There have been various 4-barrel handguns in history. The first I recall were flintlocks. Percussion improved the safety and reliability of such guns. They came to be called pepperboxes by the early 1800's. Sharps made a small 4-barrel cartridge pistol often called a "derringer". "Yancy Derringer" used one in an old TV series that one of my pals owns. I had one in .22 rimfire. Bigger were howdah pistols usually in .577. Double-barrel versions were even .73 caliber.

I haven't seen the movie, but I suspect it was a C.O.P. (Concealed Off-Duty Police) Pistol.

It was a fairly big, heavy, clunky pistol introduced in the late 1970's as a back-up or off-duty pistol for policemen. It was chambered in .357 Magnum.

They were made, IIRC, by AMT (Arcadia Machine and Tool) or IAI (Irwindale Arms, Inc) for a short time. They were made in small numbers because they just did not catch on with policemen. About the time the C.O.P. was introduced, the big switch from revolvers to semi-automatics got started.

In nearly 30 years, I can recall handling only two of these oddities. I would not want to have to rely on one of them to get me out of trouble, but if it was all I had, I believe I could make believers out of at least four opponents.

Doc's right. The C.O.P was a 357 Magnum with a "rotating" ratchet that struck the 4 firing pins in sequence. . Not very reliable, and hardly a gun you would risk your life on....

Don't have a clue though if this is the gun used in your movie...I haven't seen it.........Thumbs Up Doc!
