Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax have to provide you with one free credit report every 12 months. You can go to their websites and request one. You can also go to your bank and they would probably be able to run a report for you. Be wary of credit consolidation companies. Many of them are scams and do not help you at all.

It's a good idea to keep an eye on your credit report. Checking it only once a year is not enough.
Incorrect (and possibly negative) information can be added to your credit records at any time. And since the three credit reporting bureaus — TransUnion, Experian and Equifax — don't share information, you need to keep track of what's going on with all three.
Naturally, you don't want potential lenders, employers, landlords and others to see credit information that's wrong. And let's not forget that your credit score is based on information from your credit report.
The sooner you find and fix errors, generally the easier it will be to resolve them. The same goes for identity theft — the sooner you detect that you've been a victim of identity theft or fraud, generally the easier it will be to repair any damage to your credit and your good name.

It is always a good idea to keep track of your credit history once a year. In fact, I just got my report recently from one of the credit bureaus. It'll help you see the improvements or possible downside in your credit history.

To get your free report check out www.annualcreditreport.com
If you are interested in getting the FICO scores, there's a small amount of $$.
Check w/ your diff. credit card comps. to find out if someone offers you a 1 year low interest rate. then u can transfer balances and consolidate to one card. You could also request to waive the balance transfer fees.

AnnualCreditReport.com is the site set up to get your free annual credit reports from all three credit bureaus. All other sites require you to sign up for monitoring services.

If you have old debt, you should contact the collection agency and negotiate settlement. You can probably settle it for 50% to 75%. Lump sum payment gets the best deals. Payment plans have to be short term. Get any settlement agreement in writing and do not give them access to your bank account.

If the debt is close to 7 years old (from the date of delinquency) you may just want to let it fall off your report.
