intercostal muscles in your ribs pull the chest cavity apart which enlarges the lungs, your diaphram also flattens out which makes the thoracic cavity larger as well. The lungs become larger while the concentration of air inside them stays the same...so what happens? Naturally, the air pressure in the lungs decreases which causes air from the environment to rush into the lungs to balance the air pressure.
