I know they were really one of the crappiest company in the worldback then.... but look at them now... in just 5 years, they are making a great cars. #3 initial quality by J.d. power. the state of the art robots with latest technology for built cars, they test drive every model to 100,000 miles, one of the most advanced safety tech. on the load today, 10 yrs warranty is plus.I hate when people say this company is bad without actually seeing them and test drive, or at least they don't even know about auto brand... and what is happening right now...
From seeing them with concept car, they're definately a BEnz killer. all their concept car is a high tech and looks really better. ANd i even saw it on article says hyundai is better then benz in concept car.

The quality of Hyundai's vehicles have drastically improved and I think a lot of people realize that already. For example, the Azera won the APEAL study by J.D. Power in the large car category 2 years in a row. However, when you compare Hyundai to Honda or Toyota their quality is just not as good. Getting people to actually try one of their cars is a challenge for Hyundai. However, Hyundai owners seem genuinely satisfied with their cars as I believe Hyundai has one of the highest owner loyalties.
Back in the 80's and early 90's some would not have even uttered Hyundai with Toyota and Honda in the same sentence. Today they are compared to both and Hyundai's vehicles have been shown to compete quite competently with cars from Toyota and Honda in terms of quality, price and performance. I believe that this is a testament to just how good their cars are.
A problem that Hyundai has is the pricing of their vehicles. Though they are cheaper, many people believe that you get what you pay for. So even if their quality was to exceed that of Toyota or Honda, because their cars are cheaper they will be perceived as such: cheaper and hence lower quality.
I believe that if Hyundai were to price their cars more in line with Toyota and Honda, while at the same time investing the extra money charged into each car they will truly have a superior product.
For the previous poster 'deautophile': The J.D. Power Inital Quality Study covers the first 90 days from the date of purchase. As evidenced by the list compiled by J.D. Power, a lot can go wrong in the first 90 days of ownership. Even Lexus, the perrenial champion in quality serveys, has on average one problem per vehicle in the first 90 days. Additionally, and I apologize if I offend, but it seems you do not know your cars. You compared Lexus, Volvo and BMW to HYUNDAI (???). Hyundai is not a luxury brand (though they have such aspirations) and should be compared to Toyota et al.

It takes people a long time to come around to new ways of thinking. Just as some people still won't buy a Japanese car because of WWII and some people still think Fords, Chevys and Dodges are made in America, so too are a lot of people stuck on a rusted Excel on the side of the road as Hyundai's image.
Reliability has to be proven long-term. Toyota and Honda got a reputation for reliability when people started seeing them with a quarter million miles and still on the road. Well, driving a quarter million miles isn't something you do in a week.
Reputations take a long time to earn and build.

1. They are making SOME good cars. They do not have ANYTHING absolutely world-beating. Also the Accent is still a piece of ****. (Lots of reports of mystery engine management problems resulting in piss-poor fuel economy, for example...like low-20s)
2. Initial Quality is a load of horseshit.
3. So what?
4. Driving 100k miles in a few months isn't the same as doing it over a few years, even if you do have an abusive test cycle.
5. They do have a few very safe vehicles, and that is a good thing.
6. They only have that warranty because they HAVE TO. In Korea, where they have little real competition (protectionist tariffs), their warranty was, at least a couple years ago, 18 months. (Samsung's is 3 years, so they might have increased it to match them). This warranty is the ONLY reason to buy a Sonata or Elantra over an Accord or Camry or Civic or Corolla. And since it isn't fully transferable, that means it's only worth it if your intent is to keep the car a very long time.
Note that many people bought their Accents with just that intent, but can't stand to keep them.
7. That's what a reputation does. They made their bed, now they have to sleep in it. It doesn't matter how good their cars are, it will take at least as long for their reputation to improve as it did to get a bad reputation to begin with. General Motors and Ford are still having the same problem. (Chrysler's problems are far larger than that)
8. They aren't even in remotely the same market as Benz. First of all, the Mecedes Benz name is actually worth something. Hyundai's is worth very little outside of Korea. (Even if Hyundai is building more reliable cars than MB, which I understand they are) No one apart from Koreans are going to pay 70 grand for a Hyundai.
Second, their current halo car, the Equus, is FRONT WHEEL DRIVE. I understand they're working to remedy that, but still, that's something that would just never fly in that class of vehicle outside of Korea.
9. Where was this article? The Korean edition of Motor Trend? (They are bigger bunch of whores than even the American edition, which I never would have thought possible.)

JD Powers and associates gave hyundai #3 in INITIAL quality, they only test the car the first 90 days of ownership; so what car wont be nice in 90 days? i buy a car that will be nice after 5 years, not 90 days!!!!
'state of the art robots with latest technology' ??? can you explain that to me in detail because thats such a general statement that isnt backed by any real facts.
and test driving a model to 100k miles in the course of a couple months is nothing! its how the car takes 100k miles in the course of 5 or 10 years that really matters.
and they are not advanced in safely like you think. have you looked at lexus or volvo lately?
the 10 year warranty is non transferrable. and id rather have a car that was so reliable that i didnt have to constantly be putting it in the shop anyway, thats a hassle, even if it is covered by warranty.
and yes i have seen them and driven them out of curiosity, and they are crap!!! I have a 2002 bmw with 90k miles on it and it runs better, performs better, looks better, feels better, and gets way more compliments than ANY brand new hyundai
AND YES I KNOW MY CARS SO DONT TELL ME IM WRONG ; )
and a concept is just that, A CONCEPT!!!
------------
I'd like to add to my answer, and respond to 'klj041284's comment. YES i do know my cars and I DO realize that BMW, Volvo, and Lexus are in a higher class than a Toyota, Honda, Nissan, or Hyundai, HOWEVER, what i was trying to point out what that the individual who posted this question said that Hyundai is/has 'one of the most advanced safety technology on the road today'
'on the road today' meaning EVERYTHING ON THE ROAD PERIOD. in that case he is wrong; Hyundai is not nearly as close to MB, Lexus, Volvo, or BMW in reference to the technological advances in safely that they have made

I don't understand it either. It's just because of the general public's line of thinking. If it's not a Jap, it's crap. There are too many people who don't want to go with something else. I think the warrenty that Hyundai offers is enough to sell me. Not only will they fix a problem, but they'll tow the car to a repair shop and supply you with a loaner! Same thing applies to some American cars. They're not crap if you don't give them the care they need.

i admit i havnt been in a new one, but the older ones feel cheap. some of the 02-03 models that look like a benz look exactly like that, a cheap benz. im just not convinced, they do have a warranty but as of now to me that means that you only have longer to take it to a dealership for free.

Some people don't want to be confused with the facts. The sister company, KIA has done a nice job with the Amanti. Looks nice , is well made, has been a best buy for awhile.

Because reliability tests done by independent companies (of course THEIR test drives say the car is great) suggests otherwise about their longevity, and because they have so many loopholes that get them out of paying on their "long" warranty that it is virtually useless after two years. They're getting better, but they are still nowhere close to Toyota and Honda for reliability, resale, and overall quality.
