I currently hold a Permenent resident card (green card) to live in the U.S., I m also a permanent resident in my home country and we use a simple ID card to get in and out, a passport is only needed when I travel to other countries. I haven't flown internationally for a few years. from what I can remember, a passport has to be present at the airport in order to check-in and pass the security check points. The problem is, my passport has expired and I need to travel within the next few days. Is a valid passport nessisary to board a plane? is it possible to do so with a valid photo ID? (like a driver's liscense). like I said before, I can use my ID card to get into my country, and come back here using the Permanent resident card and my renewed passport, so that's not gonna be a probem.

You're not going anywhere internationally without a passport, you'll need it just to get your boarding pass and through security.

If you are traveling outside of the US, you will need a valid passport. There is no getting around that. A photo I.D. is helpful, but not enough. Try this website for speedy (even same day) passport renewals. There are several companies who can do this type of expedited service for you (expect to pay through the nose, though).

YOU NEED a valid passport to go out of the US.
Airlines scan them at check-ins.
If you board a plane domestically, you do no ned a passport, just a valid ID Card with picture.
Go to your consulat /embassy to renew your passport, since it is not a US one.
Even returning in your countre and coming from the USA, you need a passport, I don't believe just a ID card suffice. But again the best answer would by at you consulat/embassy of your country, since you don't say which country you are from , every one have they own rules.
