1:30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.
1:31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
1:32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
1:33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

What is John talking about here. Is it just that he knows Christ is the Messiah?

The John who wrote the book of John and the John talking here are two different Johns. The John mentioned here is John the Baptist. And yes He is basically declaring Jesus is the Christ.

He is confirming that Jesus was the true Son of God. Speaking of the Spirit descending onto this earth and into Jesus. He affirms Jesus to be the Savior, the Shepard among lambs. A gatherer of men by whom all may be saved through unbreaking unbelief in Him. He is our King. I hope this helps, God bless.

Wow--that's a powerful and beautiful passage. John had prophesied before this about the coming of Jesus, and now he's telling the people what he meant. Is that your Q?

He is bearing record that Jesus is the Son of God according to the message he received from God.

yeah, basically. i don't know how familiar you are with the scriptures... the guy who wrote the gospel of john is saint john (aka ''the beloved disciple john,' ''the apostle john,'' ''john the revelator''), but he's writing about what john the baptist saw and said.

(Isaiah 53:7) He was hard pressed, and he was letting himself be afflicted; yet he would not open his mouth. He was being brought just like a sheep to the slaughtering; and like a ewe that before her shearers has become mute, he also would not open his mouth.

(1 Corinthians 5:7) Clear away the old leaven, that YOU may be a new lump, according as YOU are free from ferment. For, indeed, Christ our passover has been sacrificed.

(1 Peter 1:19) But it was with precious blood, like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb, even Christ’s.

(Revelation 5:6) And I saw standing in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures and in the midst of the elders a lamb as though it had been slaughtered, having seven horns and seven eyes, which [eyes] mean the seven spirits of God that have been sent forth into the whole earth.

(John 1:29-30) . . .The next day he beheld Jesus coming toward him, and he said: “See, the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is the one about whom I said, Behind me there comes a man who has advanced in front of me, because he existed before me.

(John 6:51) Jesus said: I am the living bread that came down from heaven; if anyone eats of this bread he will live forever; and, for a fact, the bread that I shall give is my flesh in behalf of the life of the world.”

(1 John 2:2) And he is a propitiatory sacrifice for our sins, yet not for ours only but also for the whole world’s.

(1 John 4:14) In addition, we ourselves have beheld and are bearing witness that the Father has sent forth his Son as Savior of the world.

John 1:31

(Isaiah 40:3) Listen! Someone is calling out in the wilderness: “Clear up the way of Jehovah, YOU people! MAKE the highway for our God through the desert plain straight.

(Malachi 3:1) “Look! I am sending my messenger, and he must clear up a way before me. And suddenly there will come to His temple the [true] Lord, whom YOU people are seeking, and the messenger of the covenant in whom YOU are delighting. Look! He will certainly come,” Jehovah of armies has said.

(Luke 1:76) But as for you, young child, you will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go in advance before Jehovah to make his ways ready,

(Acts 19:4) Paul said: “John baptized with the baptism [in symbol] of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”

John 1:32

(Matthew 3:16) After being baptized Jesus immediately came up from the water; and, look! the heavens were opened up, and he saw descending like a dove God’s spirit coming upon him.

(Mark 1:10) And immediately on coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being parted, and, like a dove, the spirit coming down upon him;

(Luke 3:22) and the holy spirit in bodily shape like a dove came down upon him, and a voice came out of heaven: “You are my Son, the beloved; I have approved you.”

John 1:33

(Matthew 3:11) I, for my part, baptize YOU with water because of YOUR repentance; but the one coming after me is stronger than I am, whose sandals I am not fit to take off. That one will baptize YOU people with holy spirit and with fire.

(Acts 1:5) because John, indeed, baptized with water, but YOU will be baptized in holy spirit not many days after this.”
