The only negative aspect of a China vacation is, the transportation and overwhelmingly crowded places of interests.

Avoid the first week of May and October, I think you'll be fine. China is big, not just historical old stuff, there are many more.

I was a bit surprised to see so many negative ideas on China in the same post.
If you never come to China, how do you know you are holding the right thoughts about it?

Tummi and the poster above are quite right. Why not go? If you go with an open mind, ready to be challenged, you will enjoy the country and its people. But traveling to China is not your usual beach vacation, it is more a journey of discovery, there is the ancient and the modern, and many contrasts that are sometimes difficult to understand for "westerners". If you are an experienced traveler, you can explore China on your own with a good guidebook and phrasebook (I recommend the Lonely Planet series), just dive in and go with the flow. If you prefer, you can join a tour but your contacts with the people will not be as easy as your main contact with China will be through your English-speaking guide, so the experience, while still enjoyable and easier, will be at a different level. You can do a 2-week whirlwind tour of China and see all the must-see places, or you can just hang out and feel the pulse of that country, either in cities or in the countryside depending on your interests. I got hooked on China and 1984 and traveled there over a dozen times and still find something new in every trip...I met wonderful people over the years and I cannot go back to China without visiting them...

China is a very interresting country with a lot of sightseeing, but its not a hot vacation spot. I did notice a lot of older couples there in group tours. I suppose if you have the money, thats the way to go so that you are assured everything is 1st class.

I was there for different reasons other than vacation and sight seeing though. It was very educational and I would recommend it to those that are physically fit and have a tolerance for travel that is less than first class because that is the only way to see the countryside and meet the local people. You have to get out and walk the streets and shop in the local stores. Then you will really enjoy the trip and have a lot of fun.

Why spend your money and your precious vacation on China while there are Hawaii, Tahiti, and many other fine touring interests around the world.

Remember how pro-democracy students and civilians were ran over by tanks and shot at Tienanmen Square.

Perhaps, China may be rich in history. But, do you want to get a lecture on ancient Chinese history while on vacation?

I'm really surprised at the amount of prejudices people have for China (or Asian countries in general?)
China, as we all know, is a country with very long history and deep-rooted culture. To visit, go there with open mind. Don't presume that "Western good, Eastern wierd". I had been to both Shanghai and Beijing for vacation, enjoyed them both. I planned to visit other cities like Kunming in near future.

Anywhere is a good place to be if you haven't been to.Why narrow your choice to only the places that are mostly visited by the westerners.
We learn about other countries in our Geography, we know where they are located, climate etc..
To the westerner, they only know about their own country.I have been to many countries around the world, sadly not many people know where Malaysia is.
China is a beautiful country, rich in history and fine art.

I think it's a bad idea. I'm personally boycotting China's products due to our recent recalls. I certainly wouldn't invest in their country as a tourist.
