Get some snow chains in case they are needed. Check with an auto parts store to have them order you the right size for your tires and practice putting them on and off before you leave home. In some mountainous regions they will have warning signs that tell you when they are needed.

What part of NY? Not all of it has "lots" of snow, more in the Lake Erie and Lake Ontario regions affected by "lake effect" snow.
Your Toyota should be fine for the most part. Have some good tires on it, and if you are real worried, get snow tires.

A good driver can drive just about anything in the snow. Since you are probably not used to it just take it slow and don't do anything sudden like floor it, slam on the brakes, turn, all that stuff.
Snow chains are illegal in many places.

hmm this is tough i would recommend finding cheap seasonall tires because in the south you don't get alot of snow but on the other hand alot of people from newyork do not drive with chains on their tires they drive snow tires or studded snowtires but some people drive with seasonall tires which you can drive all year round and you wouldn't look kinda silly driving with chains on you tires also they be kind of a pain switching the chains on in off in 30 degree weather because some areas do get plowed

I believe the Corolla is a FWD car so you should be fine. If it was RWD you might have a litle more trouble with slipping. Just remember to leave more than usual room for stopping and don't slam on the breaks you will go sliding.

Yes snow chains or cable chains will really help you out if things get messy. They don't cost much for your tire size. And yes, do practice putting them on and taking them off before you need to.
