There is an awful lot of it around here. It makes me wonder what they do with it all. Especially the larger animals like deer. Do they cremate them, like the Vet hospitals do with animals after they are euthanized?

To "James Watkin ": Thanks for answering, but they cant leave dead bodies laying around. Do you know what that would smell like? Besides, diseases spread like mad when there are corpses laying around? I would rather shell out a few bucks to nuke a racoon than die of the plague.

It's up to each state in the US to determine the method of disposal for "road kill". Some states bury them in specially designated areas while other states prefer to go the incinerate/cremate route.

One method *not* used? Dumps and landfills. Every state has prohibited the use of county landfills for animal carcass disposal. The reason being, the inordinantly high risk of disease-- especially given the fact that they were wild animals ... and rabies is a very viable part of that risk. It's become such an issue that many county workers are fearful of handling road kill... and with good reason.

The risk of diseased carcasses is the reason "road kill" animals aren't intentionally left in the road.

Where Does Roadkill Go

Believe it or not, here in winter in my state they pick up the deer and take them to the local zoo and feed it to the lions and other big cats. I have seen them loading the deer onto a trailer by the side of the road. Since it is freezing, the meat does not go bad and is not stinky or rotten- and the haunches or part that is not hit by the car is just fine! I think it is a GREAT idea!

It goes in a trash bag and to the dump. Do you want to shell out the dough to have them all cremated, because you are welcome to. I'm not.

Personally, I think they should leave the animals there and let the insects and the birds and other animals eat up. It is called the circle of life after all.

They scrape the dead animal up and grind it up and make dog or cat or hog food outta it. They boil it first to kill the bacteria.
Sometimes they give the grinded meat to poor families to make hamburgers.
