Mean is letting her get run over by a car or eaten by a dog. It is nice of you to let her have the time, and wonderful that you care enough to look after her. I can tell you love your cat. My cats are allowed out on our balcony, we are on the 3rd floor of our apt and they have their little taste of freedom. And they are safe.

It's not mean.
It's hard to b e sure a cat is safe when it's outside, and there are a lot of dangers out there for cats who "roam around."
They can be frightened by something, run, and not be able to find their way home. They can be hit by a car or attacked by a dog or a territorial cat. They can pick up fleas.
I used to let my cats out but after my Manx was hit by a car (she's fine, after $1200 surgery) they are now indoors-only and I think they're just as happy.
Statistics indicate that the average lifespan of a catthat is allowed outdoors is four years. The average lifespan of an indoor-only cat is 14 years.

It's not mean at all.
It's the law to keep cats on a leash now anyways, and most cats that roam outdoors need to have their claws, which lets them get into all sorts of trouble-Hurting birds at bird feeders, attacking skunks or raccoons that will hurt them, and getting stuck in trees. If you prefer an indoor cat then it's very nice of you to take them outdoors once in a while for some air.
Some cats don't even like being outdoors.
It's just preference in this case..no harm done.

Personally I don't think it's mean.
A lot depends upon how safe your local environment is for her. In the UK which is rabies free and there are no natural predators of cats, it's considered a healthy lifestyle for cats to go outside. It's estimated that 90% of cats live an indoor/outdoor lifestyle.
However, in other countries where rabies or local wild animals are a threat, then obviously it isn't safe to allow cats outside unsupervised. In those areas most cats are kept indoors permanently.
When I lived in the UK all my cats were allowed to go outside if they wanted to. However I now live in Cyprus, where cats are considered little more than vermin and poisoning is quite common as are crazy drivers, so I no longer allow my cats outside on their own. I try to make indoors as interesting for them as I can and provide lots of toys and play games with them. I also accept that certain behaviours are natural such as scratching and climbing, so I make sure they have items of their own they can use for those purposes.
Your cat has the best of both worlds. She gets to enjoy the mental stimulation of going outside to experience new sights and smells, but has the reassurance of you there to protect her.
So long as you and your cat are happy, don't let what other people say upset you.

that is definitly not mean. it's amazing that u can even let your cat out for an hour. but dont make your cat an inside and outside cat, i have had way to many cats get hit by cars so honestly it's for there own safety. as long as they get alot of time to roam around in side then it's fine.

I used to live in a part of Florida that rapidly went from rural to suburban. Lots of people with cats moved there, and there were always "missing cat" signs posted everywhere. There was a reason the cats were missing. Coyotes.
There was a large pack of coyotes that lived in the local state forest that hunted the cats let out by their owners. There were also rattle snakes, feral dogs, big, poisonous spiders, alligators, and heavy traffic. It was a dangerous place for pets, small children, and stupid adults.
You're being a good, conscientious owner.

My cat has never been outside. In fact, she won't even go near the door. Some may think it is mean, but anytime she went near the door, I would spray her with water.
I have had one too many cats get hit on the road or get eaten by coyotes (use to live on a farm and had barn cats) that I will not let my cat go outside.

I keep my cat inside, I think it's good that you watch her. No matter how well your cat is trained there's always a chance she'll start going after a bird or get run over. I never let my cat out because I don't want to take any chances. So no, that's not mean at all!! It shows you care about your cat a lot.

It's so much safer for a cat to be an indoor cat. Most cats are just happy to be able to sit by an open window and watch the birds.
By keeping your cat indoors you are reducing her risk of fleas, bites from other cats, rabies from wild animals, getting hit by a car, eating something she shouldn't and getting lost!

No, it's not unfair. That is just retarded. Let your cat out for as long as you can watch her. It's unfair to your neighbors for your cat to roam around the world, and your cat might get hurt outside.
