This was popular in the early 1960s. Variations were to use Dr. Pepper or 7-up instead of a cola. The flavor of the pop was pretty meaningless. Basically, you were cooking the ham in sugar-water.

It made more sense when people were using country hams, which were cured with salt. You needed a lot of fluid to hydrate the ham.

Most cooks these days have never prepared a country ham. Most of the stores around here don't carry country hams, although I know of one that has Smithfield. Great hams, but sugar hams are a lot easier to prepare.

By the 1970s, most people were using sugar hams and using a sugar rub, and it gave better results.

Only if it's country ham and you like red eye gravy....Yum! I wouldn't do it in a crock. Needs an iron skillet. The point is not for the ham to soak up the Coke, but to flavour the pot liquor. Add butter, and maybe deglaze the pan with some sour mash or Tennessee sipping Whiskey.

It won't change the taste much at all. Chances are - you won't taste the coke at all. The acid in the coke will help keep the meat tender; and the flavor comes from the ham itself and whatever else you put in the pot with it. I have a recipe for BBQ chicken that uses Coke (or similar product); I make it quite often.

Well, I had this friend that used to bake Chicken in the oven, and instead of pouring a bit of oil, wine or beer used coke. At the beginning I was a bit disgusted but to tell the truth it tasted great! Just try it!!

½ ham (5-6 lb.)
1 cup brown sugar
1 ½ cup Coca-Cola®
1 cup crushed pineapple (optional)
Wash ham thoroughly. Rub fat side with brown sugar. Pour Coca-Cola over ham.
Pour crushed pineapple over ham. Bake at 450 degrees for 3 hours. Makes 6
servings.
This is a great recipe and keeps the ham very moist.

Just remember, 3 hams will kill him...

Ham is already cooked, but doing it in a crockpot with coca cola would probably give it a sweet, maybe sugary, taste.

Yeah, use onions too. Gives it a bitter taste to keep it from tasting too sweet.
Don't forget the cloves and the additional glaze.
