Really! This can be argued either way. As christians, Jesus died for our sins so we didn't have to be burning in hell! And I can' speak for everyone, but I'm sure the atheists feel like they are happier without the complications of religion!
So to say life isn't about happiness is crazy! Am I supposed to be ruled by fear or indifference? Why on earth would you choose a belief system if it didn't make you happy or fulfilled? Isn't that the point?

So we're supposed to spend our lives in fear and anguish because God wants us to? I like my God better, thanks.

Who told you that Jesus died for our sins? Did Paul tell you that, or some other Church leader? Ask them (rhetorically) to tell you where in the Bible Jesus ever said such a thing.
(Jesus lived, taught, and died to teach us how we can get along with each other and by our conduct qualify for Heaven; ergo Jesus gave his every effort including his death to teach us how to conduct ourselves for the remission of our sins. )
That's my opinion, now will some "do gooder" report me to Yahoo for expressing my opinion?

Personally, I think that the purpose of life is the improvement and development of our spirits. In so many ways experience helps you grow. And happiness is a measure of spiritual health. Some people are utterly depressed for no good reason, others are exceedingly happy in the most unpleasant of circumstances...
So, it's really not about "choosing" a belief system that makes you happy or not. Though that helps. That implys that X system works in sync with your spirit and helps keep it whole. I'm not talking about the "Weee! Super Smash Brothers Brawl is coming out soon! I'm so happy!" I'm more talking about that deep measure of happiness, of joy, that seems to rest within the same aspect of our minds and spirits and hearts as love.
To summarize: life is about the pursuit of knowledge, experience, growth, and spiritual health. By doing such things, you shall also attain that deep joy.

There is an inner joy that God gives us when we are in His will and close to Him...but often times life for a Christian is filled with suffering. As Jesus even said, "You will weep and mourn while the world rejoices...but your grief will turn to joy." We are to look ahead to the eternal reward we have for our sufferings, not the temporary happiness and pleasures the world seeks after.

Life is not about happiness. It is simply nothing more than continuation of the species; survive long enough to mutate, adapt and procreate.
Happiness is gravy. There are people on Earth today that wouldn't know what you meant if you asked them "are you happy?" because they haven't the luxury to contemplate such things.

Life is about happiness, contentment, fulfillment, satisfaction, and did I say happiness. You only go around once, make the best and most of it. When you look back on your life, know that it was good.

It's about realizing that our time on earth is short lived which in itself is cause for sorrow, but at the same time realizing that there is hope of rescue. To argue that there is no sorrow however, is to be unrealisitic and ignorant of a dying world.

Fulfillment. People are only "happy" - that can mean a lot of things - when they are getting a keen sense of satisfaction out of life. And that only happens when you are using your best gifts, both professional and personal.

Happiness is the mere opposite of sadness.
The Buddhist goal is contentment, or "balance," which lies between the 2. It is neither.
