If the ring was 5'x5' square...who would have been tops? I don't really give it much thought when it comes to infighting at heavyweight. At the lower weights, it was probably either Duran or Hagler being the best phone booth fighters. What about Dempsey?

I always thought that Duran was a great infighter along with Frazier, Marciano, Dempsey, Galaxy, Olivares, Pacual Perez, Chavez, Mickey Walker, Henry Armstrong, and Harry Greb would be on my list of great infighters in their noteworthy careers. To me Hagler was more of a boxer first than an infighter though he could fight great either from the outside or inside.

Either Dempsey or a young Tyson(as in before prison).. Tyson had the power, the footwork, the defense, the chin.. he had it all. So did Dempsey, he was a well versatile fighter with a great solid chin and had tremendous power, he only lacked some fast feet, but he had a galore of heart. He also had The Dempsey Roll, a great technique for evading punches and throwing strong Hooks to the head... These two were definitely the best Heavyweight infighters.... Marciano would be too slow to be considered an infighter

Off the top of my head, in no order:
Joe Frazier
Rocky Marciano
Riddick Bowe - Yes , very good infighter with a terrific uppercut
Joe Louis - when he had to fight on the inside he was devastating.
Jack Dempsey

Between Marciano and Dempsey I doubt anyone else could have stood toe to toe with either. I think Rock would have even got to Jack if history would have allowed the ultimate show down. There have been heavier hitters, Liston, Forman and even Shavers, but those guys had flaws that would have showed had they been forced to stand and trade.

In a phone booth, Rocky Marciano was about as tough as it gets.

Dempsey was mean on the inside. He was known for throwing short fast combo's., some from only a 12 in. distance, and really hurting guy's with these inside shots. And these were various punches, coming from different angles, with both hands.
GF*Sal.... Dempsey lacked fast feet ?!
Please watch the footage of Dempsey sparing with Big Bill Tate. Dempsey's footwork is Extremely quick, combined with great coordination and agility. (even does a Ali style shuffle) Watch how fast he closes the distance on Tate. The one thing Dempsey did'nt have was slow feet or footwork.

For me the best infighters (of all time) in the heavyweight division are, not necessarily in this order: Jack Dempsey, Joe Frazier and Mike Tyson.

I personally would think Joe Frazier, Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Earnie Shavers, Bob Fitzsimmons, Jack Dempsey;), Sonny Liston, and David Tua would make execlent "phone booth fighters". I know theres' more, but I think this would be roughly the crème de la crème!

In most of the names I can think of...the fighters got as good as they gave...they could just take more.

In a phone booth, I would have to give James Toney major props. He is one of the few people I know in his prime that could lean against the ropes and let someone whale away at him and hit very little in the process.
