If the data is critical, then best to take it to an expert, I have seen so many trying and then 'oops' when things go wrong.

To repair Windows, pop in the XP CD, start up (make CDROM the first bootable device), press enter to setup windows, then it will show any previous installation of XP, choose the one you want to reapir, press ENTER, then next screen should allow you to repair it.

The danger is that if your hard drive is faulty, or windows system is badly corrupted, the repair may not go all the way and you may have an even bigger problem.

All your data must be backed up at first !
Next you let the WindowsXP CD into the CDRom tray and restart the PC. As seeing the WindowsXP setup screen, you choose "Repair" and do the following steps. That's all !
But sometimes your PC still remains the problem after repairing or your PC won't work any more because your Windows had a lot of errors or your hard disk had bad sectors.

Forgive me for referring you to someone else's hardwork, but I feel this page answers your question fully, plus gives a LOT of other tips with Windows. http://www.kayodeok.btinternet.co.uk/favorites/kbasewinxphowto.htm
